I'm getting 16 mpg exactly in my 3.0si. 1550 miles.
In my Saab I usually get 25-27 mpg, but not today because it refuses to start.

I am averaging 15mpg in my 3.0si...I am now at 1650 miles. I was getting closer to 16 mpg, but now that I have 1600 miles I have started driving it harder and the result is my mpg dropped to 15.

But this is exactly why I opted for the 3.0 over the 4.8....when gas hits $4 gallon I wont be crying too loud. So far I have not been dissapointed in the 3.0, though the first week I was really second guessing my descission wishing I had the 4.8.

The largest hill in Louissiana is the dirt pile in my front yard, so the 3.0 is a perfect match for our highways.

no need to change the oil until the service light comes on, but the rest of the advice is good.

Waiting till service light comes on is even worse. Even under normal condition, the filter will not last ~15k miles. After break-in, many metallic particles are intrduced into the system. You want to get this stuff out asap.

I sincerly hope all of you will change at least your oil filter at least every 7.5k miles, during the course of your ownership. It's a widely accepted practice among the E3 owners.

After the factory recommended break-in period, I would very higly reco changing the oil after break-in.After this, take the engine up to redline many times. I dont quite understand what you are saying, but this seems to contradict what BMW reccommends in the owners manual:
http://www.xoutpost.com/pdf/e70/2007%...0%28E70%29.pdf

see page 122-
UP TO 1200 MILES
"do not exceed 4500 rpm..."

Can you please clarify what you are saying?

I see you had a Cayenne S, how does it compare with your X5?

I'm not saying go over 4,500 rpm. Initially, you want load the engine w/o a lot of frictional heat. This can be accomplished by using 4th or 5th gear and going up a steep hill and push the throttle down far. Best way would be to doing when the torque converter is locked and push the throttle down far. Doing a lot of starts in 2nd or 3rd gear will also accomplish the same thing. I think you get the idea. I very highly suggest you change the oil after this point. During those 1,200 miles, keep in mind to vary the engine speed a lot; so avoid highway driving.

fter this take it to redline many many times, and also let it decelerate down from high rpm on its own a couple of times (take it to redline and then take your foot of the gas).

How you break-in your engine determines how well your rings seal. This will affect your gas mileage, oil consumption, etc through the life of the engine.
