Have fun in "DS" !
Why won't BMW update software unless you complain, I'm sure the software is being updated on a regular basis and it costs basically nothing to update a vehicle. Seems like it would be good customer service to offer customers the latest software.
I would love to hear what the changes are for the current new version.

because the vintage process they use is very slow, and it cost them consideral time...which is money. Also backs-up the shop and personel that could be working on real service issues.

what they should do is allow customers to update them selves, via either downloads or DVD

The software could be updated when the car is in for service. It seems crazy to me that when there is a fix for a problem(s) they won't give it to you unless you complain. I find being pro-active is far better in business than being re-active.
Allowing people to update SW themselves could make BMW liable for any issues that arose.
What I'm going to do is follow these BMW forums and when someone on the board tells us about a new SW version I'm going to complain about the specific problem to get the update.

The beauty of having HUD on my E60 is that I normally setup the right screen to display the map, the HUD to display the arrow/directions/upcoming street name, and the main (left) screen to display the Route List. That way I have all the information that I could possibly use dispalyed at the same time. Most of the time the Route list is not that critical, in those situations I use the main screen to display the Audio or Phone screens while I still have the map on the right and Arrows/directions on HUD.

One thing to know about the CIP/Progman software updates is that depending on what they have to do it could take 6, 8 or more hours to update the software of one car. It is also VERY common for the software update procedure to crash before it's done, in which case they have to start over from the beginning. I have heard many stories on the E60 forums of it taking 2,3 or 4 days to update the software because of recurring crashes. Given all this plus that fact that dealers have very limited numbers of equipment needed for (and personnel trained in) software updates, I can see why they would not do it automatically for every car.

Also, it is common for BMW to come up with new software to fix specific problems, and in the process brake some unrelated things and cause more problems. In the last year two of the software updates for the E60 had a bug that caused the "eyebrow" lights above the headlights not to turn on anymore. They broke it in an update, then had to include a fix for it in the next version (which was months away). Then after they had fixed it in that version they broke it again in the next software version. Again, people who got that update had to wait for months to get the next version software that fixed the eyebrows again, for a second time.

Now you got me worried !!
I had an E90 and I remember with software updates on the whole things were OK from one to another other than a few issues with Bluetooth.
So yes, something tells me that another prob may arise with the update, most worrisome being that the engine management/transmission timing, etc may change (e.g lag in acceleration of E90 was apparently fixed with software update ).
Its like BIOS updates on your PC....dont do it if you dont need it.

I liked the look of the new CIP 25, have heard its faster, and also thought that new features may be added.

I think I will have to confirm with them on Monday if they are aware of any other people who have had any issues after update or if they know of features of update.

What do you guys think??
