Bottom line, it's cheap insurance

I would agree. When I was breaking in my 2004 M3, I went in for service at 2000KM. After that point, I have religiously when in for oil changes every 7500KM (good call AznMpower). Mind you, I drive that car the way it was meant to be driven. In my mind, its a small price to pay to keep the engine going strong and it pans out on resale. I certainly would shy away from purchasing a pre-owned BMW where someone followed the 25000KM service interval.

With the new X5 I have purchased, I will pay for the 2000KM service, as well as changes every 7500km once again.

do you guys only get these at the Dealer, or do you go to other oil change shops?

Best option would be to do it yourself. If you're using the maintenance freebies, the dealer is using their Castrol oil, so stick with that for the interim oil changes. Believe it or not, the engine see's wear when you keep changing oils.

Going to another shop isn't going to save you that much when you bring them the oil and they add their labor charge.

Its not about money, strictly convience. I have used a 10minute oil change shop near my home. You pull in the bay, sit in your car while they change the oil...take 5 minutes. You can chose the oil brand/type and the charges are adjusted accordingly. You never leave the vehicle. They have a guy under the car and another guy on top.

I pass by it every day on my way home, so its very convienent.

Self-oil change. $13 for the oil filter (CCA discount), ~$40 for Castrol 0W-30 (do not start a motor oil debate), and 30 minutes. Last time we paid $18 for the tools, but that's just a one-time cost.

I don't trust those quick-lube places. Learned from a friend that worked there at a short time: "Never take your car to Jiffy Lube"
