New DVD kit

Anyone thinking of getting this.. is the headrest invision system superior or cheaper .. this seems to be around $2000 USD for this plus a bezel kit to suit the colour of the seats e.g beige..... ?

Restrictions: This system cannot be used in conjunction with the factory option rear seat entertainment system (SA 6FF). For vehicles up to 10/07 production.

Installation requires the DVD player/monitor kit and the monitor bezel kit. If the vehicle has comfort seats (SA 456) then you will also need the comfort seat bracket.

• Single Disc DVD Player - Mounted in the center console for easy operation and loading of movies by the rear occupants. The DVD player is compatible with DVD, CD, MP3, WMA, and jpg formats. A padded carring case is also included in the kit to protect the DVD player when it is not being used in the vehicle.
• 7-inch Active Matrix Screens - Each system comes with 2 monitors color matched to the interior of the vehicle with high quality active matrix video screens.
• 2 Channel Wireless Headphones - 2 wireless headphones are supplied with the system and are equipped with battery saving features that turns the power off, if they have not received a signal from the system for over 3 minutes. In addition, each headrest is equipped with a headphone jack for wired headphones.
• Wireless remote control - The wireless remote has an easy to use layout and can be used from either monitor.
• Auxiliary Audio and Video Inputs - An extra audio and video input is located with each monitor to connect other devices, such as a gaming system. Because the system has three independent sources, a variety of entertainment options are available to the rear seat passengers. One monitor can be playing a movie, while a video game can be played on the other screen, or both can be playing the same source.

I agree with acedeucy. The two main difference that I thought of right away are that the ones you pictured are appendages and stick out off the seat back, reducing space and just get in the way. If you want to fold down your rear seats for greater cargo volume, and the front seats are not fully forward, the rear seat backs might hit the DVD screens. The other thing is that you are limited to watching only one source for both monitors through an external (another thing to mount) DVD player. What if one passenger wants to watch a movie and the other wants to play PS2? You can't do that with the OEM system but the Invision system allows you to view two different sources at the same time: one in each monitor. Plus there is no additional player to mount.

The link provided is my write up. Unfortunately the pictures are not showing up. (Problem with the server.) I'll try to fix it tonight so you can see what it looks like, at least in an E53.

In this point you are wrong. Read the last bullet of the official press release.

And the second point are the comfort seats, wich are a must. With the invision system you can not use the superb original headrest.

Sorry to rain on this parade, but there are definitely some "holes" in your swisscheese because that kit is not capable of displaying two "secondary" sources at the same time like the INViSiON kit can.

For example if you want to plug in an iPod Video and plug in an Xbox at the same time, the BMW system has to be viewing the BMW DVD source as 1 of the main sources. It can then play a "secondary" source to compliment the main source which has to be playing on at least one of the screens. From this setting you can then jump one of the secondary source's to play on both screens as well but you can not play 2 secondary sources at the same time. With the INViSiON system any source can be played at any time.

But you are correct about losing the origianal BMW OEM Headrests, but how suberb are they when they don't have a DVD player and RCA jacks built into each headrest. And INViSiON is the only aftermarket solution for BMW's with Comfort Seats and being able to still keep the vertical movement of the headrests.

The holes in the swisscheese are very percious. You allways pay for them too ! With the two secondary sources you are absolutely right. But Cross your heart and hope to die is this a very common scenario?

For me personally i choose the suberb OEM comfortseat headrests AND the DVD for my kids!

I agree. Those add ons are way too protruberant. Acedeucy's
system looks more factory like.
