Has anyone gone from a 4.8is to a 4.8i? Opinions wanted

Looking for opinions from those who went from a 4.8is to the new 4.8i? 'm considering it and am wondering if people have been dissappointed or pleased with the 4.8i's performance relative to the 4.8is. Thanks. GBG

I have a related question... is the S when you push the shift to the left and it goes into DS? I was gonna actually ask if driving in that harms anything... I already noticed it harms the wallet with MPG but otherwise, I love how the 3.0is drives in that gear... Anybody know what the deal is? It seems like a different transmission. Thanks!!

you are correct. It raises the point in which the transmission will shift, and then lowers your mpg. No harm done to engine, just don't continually redline for extended periods of time.

On sport package equipped X5s, the "sport" button (which is different from the shifter feature) does nothing to the trans, it tunes the suspension, throtte response, etc.

I could be mistaken, but I was under the impression that the sport button is suspension only, and that sliding the stick to the left in DS alters the throttle mapping and shift points.

I like the 4.8is exhaust sound better, I don't know about the performance though... I mean I do feel that the 4.8i (E70) has a heavier ride/feel to it but really I can't complain because the overall feel of the vehicle is better with the nav and idrive and the new interior and exterior design. The 4.8is when you get in, it makes you feel like you just got ripped off. (ie, not a big fan of the interior)

To answer your specific question, I am pleased with the e70 4.8i.
I had a 2004 4.8is and it was great. but there really is no comparison between the two. the e70 wins in every aspect. The 4.8is was a little more sport oriented and probably a little quicker. but I may have different views then others. I would rather my x5 be more refined with the loss of a little firmness and speed. however in sport mode the e70 handles absoulutly flawless.
I do not miss anything about the 4.8is. however, I also had bought a 335i if I wanted to drive like that and the e70 is my wifes DD.
does this help, or am I just rambling. haha

GBG, Post you question in E53 forum. There are few members who own 4.8is or 4.6is and wanted to buy 4.8i but did not because they did not like the 4.8i(including me) "as a sporty car". 4.8i handles good as a family car, has lot of new technology but is missing the ///M car like sporty engine and performance, otherwise it would have been in my garage long time ago.

Below is post by Scott27(who works for BMW) from this thread to give you their perspective:

While E70 4.8i is a "civil", regular version of X5. With settings tuned to deliver refined driving feeling (compared to much more raw one in "is" version).

Despite having same engine with similar power / torque output the cars are very different (due different settings). And are meant to be different.

Mind that in E53 a 4.4i was an entry V8 version, while in E70 that role goes to 4.8i (entry V8 version!).

Really, it's not valid to mix & compare performance version to regular ones. Like comparing a acing car to a "civil" one. Like comparing M to non-M.

Btw, imagine what a beast a new performance version will be if a regular version (E70 4.8i) is already almost as good (or in some respects even better) as previous performance version (E53 4.8is)!
And another from this thread:

While 4.8i is a regular model with settings to bring better milage (resulting lower torque & power output). Also E70 is bigger & heavier than E53, and also gearbox is shifting a bit more moderately - all to get better milage.
These three factors result in worse 0-60mph figure.

The "s" in the badge is there for a reason.

4.8is > 4.8i !!!

Maybe you would be happier if BMW had put 4.7i badge instead of 4.8i on E70.

This is similar to comparing the new E92 335i to the E46 M3. Their performance figures are nearly identical... but the E92 is more refined and easier to drive on a regular basis, while the M3 was better suited to the track and had a slightly harsh ride.

Although, now that I think about it, both the M3 and 335i were/are excellent on the street and at the track. So that's not quite as clear of a comparison, but I think you catch my drift.
