In my case, it shouldn't be a problem- got the tire and wheel protection for for a fraction of the price from the dealer (it took them forever to prepare the paperwork, so they made it up). i am gonna give the stock dunlops another 2k miles and then swap them for Yokohamas ADVAN ST's.

sounds a little premature. What tire pressures are you running?

I am seriosuly thinking about doing this when my tyres need replacing. My old 535d came with run flats which I replced when I got a puncture about 8000 miles in. Transformed the ride quality. I had purposely specified a spare wheel on that car, that is obviously not available in most countries for the X5.

Whilst I think the ride of my X5 is much better generally than the 535d because it has been designed for the RFT's from the outset and it has later generation RFT's it is much worse at dealing with spped bumps/tables which we have plenty of in London. It feels like the suspension is bottoming out which I am sure is the rigid side walls of the RFT's.

I reckon normal tyres which will improve handling, ride at a reduced cost and are repairable look like a very sensible option. Yes, you run a risk but the tyre pressure sensor still works with regular tyres and you can carry a emergency inflation kit like BMW used to fit to the M Roadster.

Non RFT tires

I will definitely replace the RFT tires with non RFT tires once the RFT tires are worn. I will then carry the BMW mobility kit. The RFT tires are just too heavy. I just weighed the front 214 wheel and Dunlop 275 tire at 79 lbs!!

Non RFT tires should give a nicer ride plus much less rotating mass!

I wonder how it would affect handling - the stiffness probably contributes to the harder road feel...will it be a little more wishy-washy with normal tires..although a 35 series doesn't provide that much room for bounce?

i doubt it, as long as you go with the same load index or higher, it should be fine. with yokohamas, it states specifically that the sidewall is reinforced for a more precise steering (the load index on the yoko's is 110 vs 106 on the stock dunlops. Additionally, they have a Y speed rating, which means that the tire can go up to 300 km/h. so, i don't think the handling will be wishy-washy.

Are you concerned about losing control of the vehicle at 75mph? It's my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) that the RFTs remain structurally intact enough to mitigate any sort of rollover or other catastrophic movement by the vehicle when there's a blow-out at a high rate of speed.
