Re the dipstick.... I actually found one, I believe it is on the left side as you look at the engine... Maybe it is on v8 only...?

Maybe, I have looked at 3.0 engine yet.
Intersting to hear how many people actually want the dipstick!

Cheers,

the joy of having 1st generation toys, which is pretty typical and this is the exact same reason why some people wait on 2nd gen or so, whether if its iphone, cars, etc. My check engine came on on my 1st gen mitsubishi @150 miles, reverse failed on my 1st gen jeep in the first 5K, and my X, 2nd year generation E53 and no problems at all. Based on my experience and if you run a search in most of the BMW forums, 1st gen cars acts up weird sometimes. But then again, it doesnt happen all the time. Hope once the dealer fixes it, it wont happen again within an unreasonable certain period of time.

Yes, it is only on the V8.

As for the parking brake, I always put my cars in P and engage the parking brake, unless if I am waiting for someone in the vehicle. It's instictive for me, and whenever I start off again, my instinct is to release the P-brake.

This causes a problem for my parents, because they never use it. Especially my dad, who's the "lets get up and go fast" kind of driver.

At least you have a slushbox, my "learn stick" beater 325 had no e-brake
