Any DIY E 70 Oil Changers???

A much-discussed topic on this and other boards, whether you can get a free oil change prior to the lights coming on. To clarify an earlier post in this thread, it is NOT part of your warranty. It may be part of your maintenance agreement.

According to the BMW owner's manual, absolutely not, you have to wait for the lights to show up.

According to a very old TSB that is included on the home page of X5 World, BMW will pay for an oil change after 12 months (low mileage) but will not reset the lights, so you get another when the lights do come on. That was a US TSB, not valid in Canada, and it is out of date, but it may help some.

In practice, it varies by dealer. Some will do it, some won't. They don't have to according to the published literature, but many still have the habit of doing it. My dealer will do any early oil change at 14 months for low mileage vehicles (not sure why that figure, but I go with it).

Also, the BMW CA maintenance plan is significantly different than the BMWNA plan that applies in the US.

generally, the rule of thumb is every 1qt of oil per cylender. thus, for 4 cylender engine, 4 qt, 6 cylender engine, 6qt, and 8 cylender engine, 8qt. prepare one extra bottle to top it off when needed.

besides, get a quote from ur dealer for an "out of parket" oil change in between service. My dealer quote my $85 for an oil change. if you add all the parts together for an oil change, (6 to 7 bottle of oil, oil filter, air filter and other fluid top up) i think $85 is pretty reasonable and you can save the trouble of going under the car and get ur hands dity.

How exactly does this 'electronic dipstick' work..just a dipstick on the screen? It's total bs that there's no physical dipstick..not that tough of packaging problem either.

"From my memory, my '01 3.0 takes 8 qts...and the 4.4 V8s take 8.5 qts.
I'd bet the 4.8 is real close to that 8.5 quart req'."

haha...... no one here didn't believe you, I just wanted confirm what you had already stated. There seems to be some confusion between liters and quarts.
