Did you actually test the car before buying it?

I have a 2008 X5 4.8. I do love my X5! The annoying things, well, you figure ways around things and build something of a relationship with your vehicle. I put 40k + a year on mine, so I am damn near married to mine.
Yeah, Mine had squeaks, but I fixed them. Mine doenst have the all button, so I have to tweak one more dial to keep my OCD about congruency in check.
I do roll down the rear windo on accidnet some times, but I am not in such a hurry that I dont stop it in time and simply move my hand slightly to do mine.
The leather is what it is. I had a 7 an dit was super nice. This is a "truck" for lack of a better term an d I like haveing a bit more rugged of a material .
The rest of it, well, we just arent going to have a car where EVERY little nuance makes sense. My X5 has quirks, but I work around these little issues. You say wahts annoying, I say I love how mine PIVOTS at times around corners, the engine snarls when I accelerate and the body roll is at a minimum on a cloverleaf. That can cover a lot of leatherette and misplaced buttons in my book.

I bought it used in 2009, guy traded it in for a new 7. Had 11,000 miles. From 2009 to today I have had it 3+ years and it has 138k. Some years 45k, others 25k, but it averages out over 3-5 years that I put 40k a year on.
I was at first somewhat nervous about purported BMW "lack" of reliability, but I had AAA and figured I woudl ride it out and see. Other than one road hazard that forced a radiator replacement while I was out of town, It has been a bullet proof vehicle, albeit more maintenance than say a Honda.
I pay the price and love driving it. I am happy to do it. It isnt perfect, but I like what I know.

as someone who drove 80,000 miles in two years I totally understand the importance of driving what you love

When you are on radio or iPod, hit one of the hot programmable buttons to get to a Sirius/XM channel and there is that little time delay--and makes you hit the button again because you think it didn't switch to it.

Folding rear DVD entertainment system that I keep hitting very time with my elbow. I hurt my elbow really bad the other day. Whoever designed that was just clueless.

Hmmm... this is for a 2011 3.5i X5 (the 3.0 litre twin turbo version with every option except 3rd row seating)

Cons (so minor they are laughable):
  • the position of the window switches - now I just move my hand forward an inch and there they are
  • the "can't open the door when backing up" switch - that's OK, there are 5-6 cameras that show me where I am in the world
  • the fact that unlocking the doors never means they are unlocked for long - here's probably something I'm doing incorrectly, and the button on the dash is a fast "unlocker"
  • the rear hatch usually requires 2-3 presses on the fob - probably because I often skip the unlocking part and try to jump straight to the opening part.
Pros (and this is why we bought the X5):
  • we are consistently getting 12.2-12.5 litres per 100 kilometers (... that's 18.5 to 19.5 miles per US gallon... 22ish miles per imperial gallon... city driving 95% of the time... we live on an island... better than my 2007 Z4MC)
BTW, that's $1600 annual savings over the 2001 Pathfinder we had previously
  • two highway trips this summer averaging mid-20s per US gallon confirmed by pump/odometer calculations... high 20's per imperial gallon
  • the 2011 premium sound system is superb with all the EQ options etc.
  • my son and I figured out the joystick control in about 6 minutes so no problems there (not sure if that's iDrive or not...)
  • heated and ventilated seats with a bum massager
  • seamless iPod/iPhone integration
  • adaptive cruise control
  • adaptive headlights
  • lane change warning
  • various back-up cameras (top, back, sides, etc.)
  • very comfortable rear seating with independent heated seats, climate control, etc.
  • two part tailgate
  • room for two big dogs in the back
  • massive sunroof
  • solid construction when compared to the Q5/Q7 and the MDX
  • and so on.
Every day we discover something new. Yesterday it was the time delay climate control to cool the car down at, for example, 4:30 in the afternoon. We'll never use it but it's there...

Great vehicle. I'd buy another.
