Aircon off when towing

Hi everyone,

I need help to fix my aircon. Most strangely if I attach anything to the electric connector near the trailer tow hitch (I tried with two different trailers, so this is not an issue with the trailer) the air con switches off without warning. The air con button lights up but there is no cooling.

I think this is some sort of stupid glitch as towing most often happens when someone goes for a road trip with a caravan or boat trailer and its most probably in summertime when air con is absolutely necessary. I cant believe disabling air con is a factory default while towing.
I have almost been cooked on my trip in Greece, eventually removed the connector and had no lights on the trailer - which is not only illegal but dangerous, too.
Nevertheless there was no other way to survive under the hot sun.

Please help, is there any workaround? Is it a software glitch again?

BMW service just had given me big eyes and had no idea what this thing was all about.

Is it a factory fitted tow bar?

If it has been fitted since delivery is it a BMW bar and electrics, if it is did you have it coded?

It is the tow bar that one can order as option. It came in the back compartment area, the electric outlet was also installed OEM. Nothing 3rd party modification.
This is why I suspect factory hitch.

digiteye, that's a software bug. We had the same issues on a german forum. In case you are towing a big trailer and the X has to work hard and is getting hot, the car will switch to a emergency program deactivating every non essential device (including air condition). The bug is that the car switch to that emergency program every time you connect something to the tow bar connector.

Try this. Start the engine and connect the trailer instead of connecting the trailer and start the engine. Aircon should work if trailer is connected while the engine is running . The colleagues here on the German forum got a new software, BMW is aware of this bug, so tell your dealer that there is a update which fix the issue.

bye
Sven

Thanks for the great info, I will try tonight.
I told the same thing to the BMW service in Greece, but they were reluctant to do update for me, saying only the September update will fix this. Instead they run some part testing which resulted in parking brake failure the same day. Luckily I have found the manual release so I could drive with emergency parking. The next day they fiddle again with the testing and managed to fix the parking brake. I took a print from their table which contained internal communication about the parking brake issue - very interesting... I will post it word by word later.

Getting sick of the software issues of the E70...

4 guys over at the german forum told that they got the Software upgrade within the past two weeks and since then the issue is gone. So if the serice in Greece is reluctant, give them a hard time and ask for the update. If nothing else helps, call BMW directly.

In Netherlands they have upgraded my software as a result of this.
I was lucky I told them that I was towing something. Of course my aircor worked when I brought the car in. My towing story made them link it with this problem. So BMW is aware of it.
As a bonus I got a problem solved with my USB drive where it only was able to read the song info of about half of my 16GB music collection.
This update solved that.

Klawal - which software version have they installed?

The Greek BMW service said something about the September version already available as beta version but only if a national BMW representative contacts BMW in Munich and then they approve online download...(?) I wonder if thats true.
Anyways they were reluctant to update my software so I will get it done at home after finishing my trip in Greece.

Ok, this workaround solved the problem (although temporarily), so I also can confirm from my own experience that it works.
It is pretty uncomfortable to squat behind the car with the exhaust blowing hot air in your face and attach the cable while engine is running but at least it works.
The funny thing is, signals and brake lights work on both sides but the rest only on the right.

Thanks suntsu again.

Software update will be necessary for final fix - (plus hopefully it will fix the issue with my rear camera which has disappeared after a software update lat time)
