I had the battery drain warning turn on today for the second time in a week. I have an appointment tomorrow but I'm worried that the dealer is going to blame my added sub for the battery drain. Has anyone else who installed an additional sub had this problem and what did the dealer do? Did they void the warranty if any on the battery?

An interesting sidelight from the BMW Motorcycle side.

Many years ago, I think around the late 1980s, early 1990s, a lot of people that bought BMW motorcycles were having battery problems. BMW told them all the same thing... too many short trips, bad driving profile, you have to use a battery charger, it's not our fault, it's your fault for riding the bike wrong. It was so bad that for about 2-3 years BMW was giving a free battery charger with every motorcycle they sold (I've still got one of those in my garage). And it wasn't a cheapo trickle charger, but an automatic Schmacher manufactured 2-amp charger with an amperage meter. BMW never, ever admitted to a design flaw.

But guess what?

After a couple of years, BMW quit giving free battery chargers with every motorcycle and, miraculously, nobody was having battery problems any more, in spite of not using a battery charger.

Sound familiar?

Battery Drain

There is a known battery drain issue. My new in May 2007 X4 4.8 is on its third battery and has died twice. Once without any control message. There is a parasitic battery drain that is not constant but will kill the battery over time. If it is the case with my SUV it has to be in others. It is not a driving issue, blue tooth or any other excuse. The problem is my SUV has been in service since Feb 8th and the dealer and BMWNA can not isolate it so bottom line there is an issue but they do not know what it is so no idea how to fix it. Just keep records as you may well need to take other actions

Would the dealer give me trouble about my added sub. Would they blame it on the power usage from the stereo?

I hear ya jhu321. I would have never thought I would be coming across this problem! Thank god for my SA and covering it under warranty as it should be! I have 16,200 miles on a 2008 X5 4.8i.

They probably will. I'd disconnect the amp's power, ground and remote wires and tell them you disconnected it all previously thinking it was the problem, but it wasn't. I'm saying this because it is a known problem that has shown to be common on this forum and I would try to avoid them being able to blow it off with the sub hooked up.

It has been pretty cold over here in Belgium lately, and I rarely drive my car. If I drive it, only short distances are covered. Since this weather begun, I have the discharged battery almost every day. But I do not complain since the car starts every time. I only drive for a couple of miles so recharching the battery properly is out of the question.
Will hook it up today so it can be recharged.
