brakes failed on 2008 x5 today (while on highway!!)

Hi, Just curious if anyone's brakes have failed on the x5. We were about 30 miles from home on the interstate when they just went out. When the tow truck finally arrived, the car leaked brake fluid like crazy. It's a miracle we were able to stop and coast to a rest stop.

Bmw assist was not helpful and finally the police towed the car and we had to ride (pregnant and hot with my chronically ill daughter) in the front with the tow guy! He was very nice to drive us though (although I'm sure it was very unsafe), as bmw assist sent no one and said they were sorry the dealership was closed. I'm pretty sure we would have been there all night!

I'm joining AAA for sure! But I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem. So glad we are all ok. Could have been much worse. But still, I never expected to have the brakes go out on a brand new car.

JG

what do you mean by "although I'm sure it was very unsafe"?? you mean the toe truck driver could've done something to you and your daughter?

Anyway yeah that is very strange... break failure. it's good that you guys are okay

Thats is weird - usually the brakes have separate front and rear lines and the reservoir tank is also separated for the two. Hence, if you had a leak, it would be either the front or rear set you would loose but rarely both.

- wow @ bmw assist being useless on a sunday.
- make sure the lines weren't tampered with. That's potential lawsuit waiting to happen if not.

WOw, that is very dangerous and disappointing on how BMW Assist responded. More like no-assist.

Glad to hear you were not injured. I would inspect the lines as rh71 suggested. That sounds like a very uncommon problem.

Did you have any tire work or any other service done recently? Could you have possibly run over some debris?

I did have one of the tires replaced at the dealership about a month ago. I left the car at the closed dealership with a note on it and the keys in the drop box and took a cab home from there. do you think they''ll reimburse me for that $50??!! lol

and y5choi, it's really never a good idea to have a 30 lb child riding in the front seat of a tow truck in a hastily installed car seat! plus I'm pregnant and didn't have a proper seatbelt for myself after trying to secure my daughter. we really had no choice, but we made it!

bmw assist was a joke. they were not concerned about us at all nor did they try to help us get a safe ride home. we spoke with 4 or 5 people over about 1 hour's time before we gave up on them.

hope no one cancels their AAA like we did! we thought bmw would take care of us!

thanks for well wishes! I'll let you know what the dealership says about the brakes tomorrow!

I was thinking maybe someone could have accidentailly messed something up while working on it.

If you aren't happy with your dealerships response, I would immediately let BMWNA know about this situation and how unhappy you are with their product and service.

What an awful experience. Sucks that BMWAssist did nothing. Should have called a cab and sent a receipt to the dealership.
But the brakes randomly stopped working altogether? That's very rare. In an emergency, just pull up on the electronic parking brake lever and hold it up, and the car should slow down and stop.

I would call BMW NA about the failure of assist. But -- I have personally learned how useless those services can be. I had a 2007 Acura MDX with a flat and called Acura roadside. It was pitch black out and they sent a guy in a beat-up car with one of those jacks you can get at Walmart.

Hope you and your family are fine after that.

Sorry to hear about your experience with BMW Assist, and the local contractor that they use. We just renewed our BMW Assist contract for one of our vehicles as the year of free service was up, and they were great the one time we called them. They took 15 minutes, changed a flat in the rain, and followed my wife to a local tire store with the flat so that we didn't have to put it in the clean car.

We will be interested to hear what the diagnosis is on the leaking brake fluid. Your brake system has separate circuits, as others have noted, so it is unlikely that all the brake fluid leaked out. If it leaks out of one circuit, the pedal will be very low but the brakes will function on the other circuit. Many people panic in that situation, but it is worth knowing that the brakes are designed to still be there, even with a low pedal.

It is possible that all traces of brake fluid leaked out, but in that case it is more likely to be tampering that a mechanical failure.

Good luck, and let us know what the service report says.
