[oz question] what is the best insurance company to go with??
I'm in Melbourne and I'm 24 years old. What is the best insurance company to go with. I have tried to get a quote from RACV, just wondering is there any better option?

hi mate. i found GIO to be way cheaper than a few i've looked at though i'm in a higher age bracket than you
btw, Wheels magazine has the x5 cheapest to insure compared to the ml-350 & the Q7 and its when i went thru the comparison parameters that i discovered GIO was the insurer used....

But I put pretty much the same parameters, RACV gives me $200 less than GIO

Having worked both the insurance and the repair sides of the aisle, I recommend a company that has a local agent, or an independent agent who can pick between several companies. They get a commission, so they try to help you out. The internet companies employ fictitious, albeit hot, cartoon girls and they can't help you!
All this is especially important if you have a nice car and other property. You just get better service and often have access to better repair shops. You do not want your X in the cheap shop, believe me! |

one more question, by picking a really HIGH excess, it could gives a VERY low premium. I know it depends on the behaviour of the driver. But I have 7 years driving experience and have no accident before, so I'm a safe driver...(so far, at least) In that case, is it a wise choice to pick a high excess?

You save money with a high deductible, assuming your bank allows it, but it is painful to pay if you have a problem. My advice is to get the largest excess/deductible you could handle in the event of an accident. Also, we have collision coverage (the typical accidents we have been referring to) and comprehensive coverage which covers fire, floods and other acts of nature, theft, broken glass, vandalism and such. Most people have a lower deductible for that. Of course, the cost of a new windshield today would support a whole village of lepers for a year. |
