Um . . . getting back to the original topic . . .

I am thinking along the same lines (paint 214 style wheels). I would like to request some feedback from others regarding proper painting of wheels. Should they be powder coated? What specific type of paint? Is a body shop the best place to find someone to do this work properly? I certainly don't want my first tire change to cause flakes of paint coming off an improperly done job. Thanks in advance.

These were 'painted, two layers, with a clear coat' by the dealer. Ferric Gray metallic match (not original BMW Paint.)

Powder coating would have cost double and also be a costly repair (when and if they chipped.) One wheel now has a small small nic, but the cost of repair is very little.

great looking ride!
clear coat - good idea. Do you know what type of paint was used? Anybody else out there with suggestions?

i had mine powder coated at Proformance in New Rochelle for not too much more than the painting price mentioned by KYZRSOSE. What I found from various shops is that while the standard BMW wheels are painted (it is called BMW silver and available for referencing in most body shops), the Ferric Gray specifically is a powder coat color for which BMW will not furnish details. Bunch of young guys at Proformance who seem like real car guys. I recommend it highly.

Thanks for that info! I spoke to the BMW dealership Parts guy and he was very helpful but did not have a clue what the paint code might be.
I also spoke to an alloy wheel repair guy, that Darien BMW uses, and he says that he's repaired hundreds of BMW wheels but has not come across ferric grey.

I will probably contact Proformance but if the powder coating costs a lot more, I won't be able to go that route.
