Check the inventory of the dealer. I can't see why when stock is piling up that they wouldn't want to get rid of something that is on the lot, and get rid of it right now, than force you in to some contract term.

Basically, the non-refundable deposit on an custom ordered car is protection for the dealer for odd color/feature combos that get canceled and the dealer is stuck with moving.

I tend to agree. Space Gray with Black is fairly common though...

Psychological commitment from the buyer.

Same reason they often print "NON-REFUNDABLE," even if State law says they must refund it.
