The 3.0sd drinks more than the standard 3.0d. Also if you have 20" wheels it users alot more than if you had 18".

Also if you have adaptive drive and whole lot more options than the standard X5 your economy starts to creep up as well.

My 3.0d E53 averaged 8.9ltr, then my E70 3.0d was doing 9.6ltr. The E70sd I had was doing 10.8ltr. It will be interesting to see what my new April 09 X5 35d will do considering it has a bucket load of extra's and an extra 10kw of power! (BP has released new diesel here with 5ppm sulphur)

Has everyone notice that diesel is now cheaper than petrol, with all the industry & trucking company's feeling economic pitch the fuel companies are off loading there diesel!

I just bought a 2009 35d with 18" wheels. I have about 300 miles on it and am getting about 24mpg.

That's not to bad, put 20" on it and I think you would drop down 20-21mpg. The diesel takes about 5,000 miles to run in also!

Because 5000klm is not enough to run the diesel motor in, it takes about 12,000klm. Also at that stage put a new air filter in because BMW only swaps them out every 3rd service and clean air is important for a diesel. I gain 1 & 1/2 ltrs better economy with just a new air filter.

Also 21" wheels are a large amount of mass and it will cost you a litre per 100 with them.

I guess it's worth mentioning that my 3.0sd has 21" tyres and all options except 3rd row seat, rear entertainment and alarm

i own a 3.0sd with 11.000km
I just returned from a ski trip
During this trip, 1900km of highway driving and just 70km of mountains, i was at 14,2l/100km
I have 20", adaptive drive, active steering and... a very heavy right foot!
I presume that this relative high consumption is due to the heavy speeding on the highway (nearly never under 160km/h and peaks up to 210km/h)
And by the way this is truly a fantastic car!

I have a E53 3.0d (with 50,000km) that uses on average 8.6 lites/100km, i.e. 32.8mpg imperial or 27.3mpg US. I have driven it back to back with a 3.0sd and the sd uses only a bee's dick more (i.e. less than two percent extra).

I have a X5 (E70)-3.0d and a X6-35d(same engine as X5 3.0sd)

I drive 100% in CITY and the average consumptions are:

13.5 - 13.8 l/100km for the X5 3.0d

12.2 - 12.5 l/100km dor X6 sd

Both cars have adaptive drive and almost all the options.
