Locked myself out today ... even with comfort access!

I had posted earlier how the car keeps beeping lock/unlock when washing at the car wash. A couple of people suggested leaving the key fobb inside the vehicle to avoid this, and I guess it makes sense.

Well today at the car wash it did the same thing. So I quickly opened the door, threw the key fobb on the driver's seat and shut the door as I was washing the car. As I did this, I heard a beep, and I thought oh crap! Sure enough all the doors had locked!

Of course my cell phone was in the car too. Had to call my wife from a pay phone and wait for the second key fobb while others waited in line giving me dirty looks! Even my wife wondered over the phone how I locked myself out and thought it wasn't possible... well I guess it is!

Wouldn't it have been easier to call BMW Assist and have them send an unlock signal?

Access in a pinch.

Your keys may be locked in your vehicle, but you're not out of luck. With Door Unlock*, all it may take is a phone call to the BMW Assist Response Center at (888) 333-6118 to get you back behind the wheel. Once a response specialist has confirmed your name and password, a signal is sent to your vehicle to unlock it remotely. If any additional services are required, a response specialist will be happy to assist you.

*Available on BMW Assist-equipped and activated 2008 and later X3 and Z4 and all other 2007 and later models produced 9/06 and later.

You need to set this up on forehand online, with a few safety questions.

The UK number is 0203-2225992, just in case you are not american.

Could you explain what you mean by beeping lock/unlock? And I don't think it is possible to lock your key fob. I put my key fob in the car and tried locking it from the handle but had no luck.

When washing the car, it locks and unlocks every time you spray any of the door handles, because it thinks you are touching the handles. When the key fobb is INSIDE the car, it should not do that because you shouldn't be able to lock it in the first place.

I think what happened is that I put the key fobb on the seat and shut the door so fast that the car didn't have enough time to sense the key is actually inside.

I didn't even think to call BMW assist. My wallet, phone etc was all in the car! The first instinct was to call home as I was only a few blocks away at the car wash.

Just want to let you guys know this CAN happen (if you're in a hurry) and prevent others from doing the same...

Try to repeat this when you are at home. Make sure to keep the second key out of range while conducting the test. See if it will allow you to lock the door with the key on the seat......Phil

King--you need to contact BMWNA R&D and have them come by to do a Q&A session---I bet you would stump some of them .
