that's very strange... I do this all the time (put the key on the driver seat and pressure wash the car) and it never locked the doors on me, ever. It should detect that the key is in the car right away (2 seconds) and disable any input to lock the car from outside... Strange.. unless the key fob is in the back cargo area. I think

My wife has locked her keys in the car twice. Once when she put her purse in the drivers seat and closed the door while standing outside the car talking on the cell phone. I had to drive to her office to unlock for her. How she managed to do it I don't know but her purse with her keys in it were right there on the seat but I had to unlock with my key to get in.

The second time, she set her purse down in the back while loading groceries and without thinking about it, hit the button to close the hatchback. I had to drive over to unlock for that one too.

Now that I know about BMW assist, no more! Yay!. I even programmed the number into her phone.

Could it be something interfering with a signal causing the CA system to get confused? You mentioned a cell phone... I don't know... it's just that I have not been able to lock myself out even on purpose, even with the keys on the floor in front of the back seat. I'll have to try the trunk one though... (of course it will close but will it open while the key is inside)...

+1...never had a single issue w/ CA in 1.5+ years of ownership, and cant imagine how you lock the keys inside, mine wont let me.

In the owners manual (Page 40), it specifically states that if you leave the remote control in the cargo bay and close the lifgate, it will open again.

Sounds like there may be some problems going on. How long has Comfort Access been available?

By the way, when I read the instructions on installing the BMW hitch, there is a section on relocating/re-attaching the wire antenna for the Comfort Access. So maybe you have a problem with the antenna that detects the location of a remote in the cargo area. Do you happen to have a hitch installed?

Got me, both times it happened, it's been the wife. All I can confirm is when I pulled up, the doors wouldn't open and I could see her purse inside with the keys in it. I'd get my keys out and unlock her X5.

Ok, just spent some time in the garage trying to recreate it. Locking in the trunk I think was a fluke. I remember her purse handle was caught in the liftgate, so I think it closed enough to latch, but not enough for the computer to say it was closed all the way. Therefore it didn't reopen.

However, after talking to my wife about how she locked them in the other time, here's how you can lock your keys in the car.

Lock the vehicle by pressing the roundel (like you were leaving the car to go shopping). Now open the passenger front with your hand (don't press any buttons). This unlocks the passenger front and driver front. Now, hit the roundel again with the passenger door open. This locks all the doors again. Throw your keys on the seat and close the passenger door. Congrats, you've now locked your keys in your car.

My wife was loading stuff into the front passenger side of her X5 and set her jacket down on the seat. Something she loaded onto the seat in X5 landed on her jacket just enough for the roundel button to get pushed locking the doors. She closed the passenger side door and walked over to the driver side which was now locked as was the passenger side she'd just closed.

So, while it's unlikely to happen, my wife did manage to do it, and so I'm sure children holding our keys will manage to do as well.

wow, and she did this more than once?

The idea behind CA is that you DONT use the key. Tell her to put it in her purse and leave it there...that's the idea.

Mine never leaves my pocket. You use the door handle to lock/unlock and the button on the dash to start.

She doesn't use the key. The first time it was in her purse and it got locked in the trunk when the liftgate closed on the purse strap and confused the computer is my guess. The second time she put the keys in her jacket pocket because carrying a purse through court security, which has to be searched (she's an attorney), is a PITA.

I'm not knocking the BMW and it's ability to try and prevent people from locking keys in. It actually works pretty well, but you can lock your keys in which a few others here apparently have done too.

Can you lock the X5 minus the interior alarm using just the doorhandles? i.e. without using the keyfob? I use the double roundel press often to lock the X5 but disable the interior alarm sensors for the dogs and/or kids when I run into a gas station.

I`ll chime in here too, when washing my car (this as happened twice with the E70), if I leave the key inside and start hosing the car - it will lock completely (with the key in the car). It's got comfort access - so whenever I wash now the key is kept out of range of the car (so it doesn' lock when the water hits the door handles) and definitely out of the car - so I don't get locked out.

Strange but true. Cheers,
