"auto h"
now my turn.. i drove the car 2hrs of driving with completely auto h ON. i just found out that my gas mileage went up!!! i experienced like 30mins traffic and auto h performed well. now my question is does it hurt the engine? if not im going to use this feature mainly for traffic. |

I find this very hard to believe! I use auto hold on the way home when ever the highway is backed up. I have never seen a difference in the gas mileage. Even if you were to leave it on all the time, it's not actually being used in any way. All it does is hold the vehicle for you instead of pressing the brake pedal. Not sure how that would affect gas mileage.

Auto Hold is basically your hand brake/e-brake.
It just automatically engage when your vehicle is at a full stop and disengage when you hit the accelerator. It shouldn't consume anymore fuel than normal. It should be safe for the vehicle other wise BMW wouldn't design something that would cause damage to itself. |

I'm waiting for my X5 still so I don't really understand how this works. I've read the manual section a few times. So as long as your foot is on the brake pedal, the auto-h is turned off. Correct? So if you are in stop and go traffic, do you let the car drift to a stop without using the brakes? And then auto-h kicks in when the wheels stop? Then you hit the gas again. Or do you brake normally and then let off the brakes, (activating auto-h), rest your foot on the floor, and then hit the gas when traffic moves?
Thanks, Dave |
