I have mentioned this problem to my service adviser two times over the last 5 year [yeah....] and he has only told me that the car's transmission will learn my driving habits.... My car is 5k miles out of warranty now and has never had any of the aforementioned updates done. Build date is 02/08
The transmission updates did nothing for the jerkiness and surging from a dead stop in our 2007 X5 4.8. We reported our problem more than a dozen times. BMW of Austin never made any attempt to fix the problem. They always said that the transmission updates were current. In my case, I don't think that the issue was with the transmission at all. It's disappointing that the service on a $70K vehicle was so poor. It's simply a bad design.

Based on this thread it would appear for the most part the jolting was resolved through the software update. It's my understanding this is an all day and potentially an overnight update. My 07 4.8L is going in for Brake Line Recall in a couple of weeks. I'm taking these SB's with me and speaking to them again. Every time I mention this jolting behaviour they tell me they can't replicate it and will not do a software update. Good thing I have these requests documented as the X5 is now out of warranty. This is my wife's winter car and honestly I can stand listening to the complaining for the next 5 months. I recently had a similar issue (not nearly as bad) with my new Jeep Overland, they did a software update and this thing is incredibly smooth.

Good news, my buddies at the dealership were very understanding and the X5 went through the software update. Note, had to be done overnight. I've had it back for a couple of days and have noticed a significant improvement in the transmission. Much smoother than before through the shifts and my wife and I have yet to come across one of those lunges. I even think it's shifting smoother and faster into the gears which may have improved my gas mileage. I'm very happy so far and hope this remains the way it is.

Another improvement was within the iDrive. I've noticed the screen resolution to be better defined and more responsive. Unfortunately my coding was wiped out and had to have it redone. My coding guy Raj [email protected] did a phenomenal job this evening in getting back all those cool features ie. Digital Speedo, Folding Mirrors, losing the disclaimer at start up and reverse, etc.

My only gripe is that god awful backup camera. It's just terrible.

According to my coding guy Raj, he noticed a lot of other upgrades which has added to the overall improvement of the vehicle. I'm happy and so is the wife and that is a good thing!
