My dealer replaced the DVD few days ago, so far so good. Old DVD was only 6 months old and it looked nice and clean, I had never touched it. Because of that I thought it would be the unit itself. If this new DVD gives the same problem then they'll replace the unit.

My DVD player was giving me fits last month then I went in Hong Kong for two weeks and now it rarely does it. I have to remove the DVD from the player then the error message is not so often "Insert Navigation DVD" but rather "DVD read error. Please check DVD."

I'm confused about this strange turn of events.

the problem is not consistent... it drove me crazy for a few months before i gave up and had them swap out the unit... it was actually working when they inspected it but the service manager i was working with took care of it anyway. (which is why you need to take care of your service rep from time to time)

i got the very same msg. I kept popping out and re-inserting the DVD until it finally worked... at first i thought it was a bad DVD and made copies... that worked for about a month then the problem came back...

trust me, swap it out if you can... force them... it's a bad drive.

Me too I had my DVD navigation player changed. Known problem by BMW. I just do not know how long the new one will last.

It failed after a bit more than a year.

Haven't taken mine in yet, but I have noticed some noises from the Nav DVD player. It sounds like every 15 secs or so it will make a noise, like something is spinning for 3 sec then stop. I had never noticed any noise before. Can anyone chime in if this is normal or just a sign that the drive is bad? I am having to reset the Nav by reinserting the disc every day.

Thanks

Mine made a cyclic buzzing sound, 3 sec on and 3-4 sec off. If you have to reset it each time you start, I think you should just get the unit replaced...Sounds like it is in process of failing.....Good luck....

As a follow-up, I can report that the dealer installed a new DVD player today.

BMW seems to have a few problems with CD/DVD drives. Quite a few first generation Z4's in the past had defective CD players replaced, including mine.
