BSW upgrade not available yet .. it's been in development since 2008....You will have some difficulty with the speakers in the rear pillars if that's what you want.. you'll need the trim cutouts...Amp retrofit and reprogramming may be possible...

We are working on the X5 and now have the proper shallow mount drivers It is coming!
Swapping to the premium would require quite a large amount of time, install and money. It really is not worth it if you are considering the stage 1 upgrade. We will soon be able to get the system where it should have been from the factory

Not sure how much of a music enthusiast you are but my 2009 X5 (manufactured in 2009) came with the premium sound and it is well worth the money. The bass (two subs under front seats) and highs are truly exceptional - the mid range is great but could be better. I also drive a 2006 M3 cab with the Harmon Kardon system which cannot hold a candle to the X5 sound system. One of the best that I have ever heard in a stock system.
I recently read somewhere that all 2009 X5 beyond a certain production date (Feb 2009?) were to have the premium sound installed due to technical compexities on the production line. You may want to check out inventory at other dealers. I hope this helps. |

FWIW the extra speakers in the rear pillars are the main reason we decided to order Premium Sound on the X5 that we just had built. The way we tested is to use the same iPod plugged into each system. We tested using the same songs (with high bit rate compression), back to back on two different X5s at the dealer.
Frankly I would have been happy with the Standard Sound package since I rarely listen to the radio/music except on long trips. But my wife drives the X5 by herself more than I do and likes to listen to music. She liked the surround sound feature along with the rear pillar speakers. I have premium sound and bass is mudded and mids are not as pronouced as well. I'd opt for an upgrade if possible. Maybe it's too much to expect a car audio system to sound like a home theater setup?? but hey, nothing's impossible

I have listened to couple of *premium* sound systems in various cars...from BMW to Jaguar's B&O, Mercedes's Logic7 HK, etc...I feel the car companies charge a lot for these systems which ideally should not cost more than coupe of hundred dollars.
In my opinion, anyone who is a true audiophile, should buy the basic system and get an aftermarket upgrade with quality components. People who are on a budget or don't care too much about high-fidelity sound, should choose the factory premium sound package. |

I decided to hold out for a 2010 X5. I'll probably end up ordering the car to get exactly what I want - which, by the way, will include the premium sound system. I'd still be interested in the speaker upgrade from BSW. Halston, PM me. I'm already a customer on a different car.

The Premium sound drivers are I believe still Philips, they are higher power rated but I do not believe they are necessarily any higher speced. You do get the extra speakers but the speakers themselves are no more audiophile quality than the standard sound. The amp is the main difference offering DSP allowing you to compensate for the main weakness - the speakers....
