Thanks for the link and the attached photo. I saw that before, but really don't know what I'm seeing. The left side looks like a close-up view of a tow hitch. Is the right side of the screen the "top view"? What are we suppose to see from the top view?

I thought the 7 series had top view. Looked up the brochure and didn't see it. They did have side view (which I don't think is part of the X5 new equipment). But I saw this in the brochure. Is this top view (in my attached photo)?
This is front view... Top view retrofit part #'s attached......

Looks like it would be really useful to hook-up a trailer, particularly a large heavy one, but I'm not sure what else, unless it really can provide more of a side view, like the Lexus system..

I have this already for 3 months on my car. I retrofitted an oem camera and I can switch between top view (looking down directly on the hitch) or 'normal' view (looking down further behind the car).

Top view is very usefull when picking up a trailer.

BMW did not program anything extra or special for this functionality. When they programmed the camera, top view was included.

Did your X5 already equipped with factory rear view camera? Or you just retrofit top view camera or rear view camera too? I am trying to retrofit rear view camera since my 08 E70 did not had this option but did not find any information of how to do it....

We're all talking about two different things, James posted the retrofit for top view which is different than the zoom view for a trailer hitch that Hans mentioned. That picture from bmw.com isn't helping From the web site:

Quote:
The rear view camera enables drivers to see objects and people that much better during tricky manoeuvres. A zoom function also makes it easier to hitch up to the optional tow coupling, which is especially practical for heavy trailers that cannot be pulled by hand onto the coupling. Depending on the steering angle, a trajectory in the monitor display shows the expected route during reversing. Top View also allows drivers to see the area to the side of the vehicle, which enables them to check the distance between their vehicle and the pavement when parking, for example.

Tim is indeed more correct than my explanation, apologies

So probably the zoom function was there from day one
