Opinion about everyday performance
I have a 3.0 SD remapped by Hartge.. its around 330hp.... Everything is working perfectly so far for 1 year and the car feels quite faster from before it was remapped.. the problem is that sometimes I feel that the car flys( literaly i feel like i am driving an M3 while the torque is amazing) and sometimes its not that fast... I know that there are factors like hot/cold weather, or altitude, humidity that might effect the turbos. Is everyone happy with their everyday performance... are there days that you feel your car very fast and others that not so fast like i do ?? ... or is it my imagination???
p.s. My previous car was a 3.0 petrol e53 x5 and there wasn't such a great difference in everyday performance.... maybe its the diesel twin turbo engine.... or maybe the remap... |

Or maybe it's your imagination! My own personal studies have shown that whenever I wash the car and especialy when I wax and detail it, it rides smoother, quieter and goes a bit faster with less pressure on the go pedal.
When it's dirty, it's not so fast and rides crappier. Is it me or the car? Then there's the pull of the task I have to do that wears on me every day, possibly affecting my job performance and relationship with my mate. And of course there's the sociological impact, what will other BMW owneres think of me? Am I not worthy to own this car? Is it possible that there are overseers who will take it away because I fail to keep it clean? These are deeper questions |

The suspension is better when it's clean. Seriously though, I've found that my 4.8i LOVES windy days. Damn, she sucks up that air and

yes yes yes... its probably my imagination.. and when ever I clean my exhaust it sounds better.... but are there here any x5 diesel (turbo) owners and preferably with a remapped ECU that can actually share their opinion...

I have got a diesel E53 too that seems to have this same issue. What i find is sometimes if u time the acceleration incorrectly it does not go as well. Me sales rep said that u need to ride the turbo. Let me try and explain what i think is happening with my E53.
Sometimes jump on the pedal, the computer will sometimes over-fuel the engine (especially with remaps), and then u hear the engine work very hard and there is not much of real acceleration. In that scenario if u do not have a particle filter like my older X5, u will see a lot of smoke in the back due to incomplete combustion. U guys on the E70 will not see any smoke coz of DPF but when u do that u are kinda choking ur engine and over fueling because the turbo has not spool up enough to provide enough air for the additional fuel ur pumping in. Next time u should try pushing in th petal gradually with the acceleration hence 'riding the turbo' or rolling the throttle as refer to this other post. It doesn’t have to do with how much I push the pedal or not….What I am feeling from time to time is that the torque is not as good as other times…. It could be every day city driving and not highway driving… or bad fuel or many other reasons…. But I am trying to find out if others feel this difference some times too… For instance I drive everyday in traffic a lot…. If I take a trip with very high speeds in the Highway then the next day the car feels faster and much more responsive…

Yea, diesel will run better when driven more. It will usaually feel more alive after a long highway trip. If u drive in the city quite alot, it is a good idea to go for a bit of a drive once in awile to clear out the dirty black stuff.

I also find that premium diesels such as BP Ultimate diesel or Shell V-Power diesel improves the smoothness of the engine, especially if you usually do short runs. I use them whenever I can find them, my first choice being the BP. We also have a diesel X3 without DPF and you can really notice the reduction in black smoke on hard acceleration from low revs. Other benefits of the premium diesel is extra power and in my case, better fuel consumption.
Whenever I cannot get hold of premium diesel I add Millers Diesel Power Sport 4 to the tank. It smells just like the BP Ultimate so I guess it could be the same thing. |
