Cummins expects the DEF usage in a 'normal' duty cycle to be 2% of the diesel fuel used.
Remember, I don't know what the comparison to the BMW usage would be. The 2% from Cummins is for our MD and HD engines. We're just going to have to figure out amongst ourselves what the true usage is. However, I'm sure that my tanks were never completely filled, and I shouldn't have received the warning message at only 2400 miles..........

I understand that different diesel engine with different duty cycles would have different usage rates. But for a BMW 35d to go 12,000 at a average of 24mpg it would use 500 gallons of diesel. if it did that on only 6 gals of DEF, that would be a usage rate of 1.2%. So either BMW never intended for the 6 gals of DEF to last between typical warranty oil changes or the usage rate on the 35d is MUCH lower than the ones quoted for Cummins, etc.
In my earlier example I chose the numbers to show that at 2% DEF usage rate 6 gals of DEF would only last for 7,200 miles at 24mpg. Funf Dreisig

I suspect that if the diesel engine burns cleaner (technology, controls, combustion chamber design) then there is less SCR required to clean the exhaust sufficiently to meet federal standards.

The DPF likes a lot of NOx to make it work efficiently and clean the PM out.......then they take out the excess NO in the SCR filter.......they can concentrate on power and fuel economy in cylinder that way............

I just returned from the dealer after they filled it with diesel exhaust fluid. All OK now. The passive(main) tank was empty and active tank was 33% full. 1st fill at 12k,2nd fill 18K, this fill, the 3rd fill, at 19k. SA says that he isn't sure if they know how to fill the tanks properly. This 35d is the first one this dealer has seen. I'm sure they still learning how to fill it. I'm being patient and not going on any long trips.
