Moving up to an X5...deal or no deal?

I am new to this forum but am not new to the forum world. This looks like a good place to hang out and learn some information.

I'm looking for some opinions from some X5 owners. I'm selling my wife's '07 328i and purchasing a newer X5.

THE X5: I have my eye on a used 2010 X5 35d, 2,800 miles, sport, premium, technology, etc. I don't have the sheet in front of me but I believe it had everything except for the rear dvd player and adaptive cruise. Can't be certified since it is in the current model year (according to the dealer). Priced at $51,988.

THE DEAL: They offered us $32,800 plus on our trade ('07 328i, premium, heated seats, xenon). They just reduced the X5 so only came down about $600 and gave us roughly $19,000 for the trade. I offered $29,500 difference and I would buy it but they aren't budging so far.

It looks like I could sell our car for around $21-22k privately around here. I usually never trade but my wife loves this X5 so might see if I can work the deal any closer to $30k difference and just trade it.

Thoughts on the offer? Good deal or walk away?

So, to understand how you are explaining this: basically they are selling the '10 for $51,800 and offering $19K for the trade ? I believe it is true that current model years can't be a CPO + I think there is a mileage minimum of like 5K anyways. If that is the deal it doesn't sound too bad on the '10--now for the trade it's up to you if you want that extra few $ on trying to go private party or not.

I would build a equally equipped 2011 X5 on bmwusa.com and see the price difference.

Correct.

Seems like a fair deal if I want to go with the diesel. I like the torque but dislike the turbo lag. I haven't driven a '11 35i so maybe there is some lag there also. The fuel mileage is nice but if I was worried about fuel mileage, I would be looking at a Prius.

The used x5 has 2,800 miles so basically new. In service date was 10/09 so it is going on almost a year old as far as warranty is concerned though.

I priced a comparably equipped '11 35d and it comes to about $65k.

Sounds like a good deal - is that 65K with the $4500 off and going have on any profit between MSRP and Invoice?

Are you are using MSRP to price?? If so, very foolish. You need to understand how to price and buy cars.

1. New X5 are going at 500-1500 over dealer COST. So net of any dealer incentives.

2. Buying a used car from a dealer is never a good deal, UNLESS it comes with the CPO warranty. Without that you might as well go to to Joes Used Car Lot. Seriously. The are just a used car lot when selling a used BMW

3. $65k for a '11 diesel? Invoice price minus the 4500 eco credit is around 55.8k. THis includes shipping, training, maco. Add dealer profit to this number. So the 'real dollar' difference seems to be 52k to 56.5 of $4500. You are taking a one year older car, perhaps not everything you want, with 2800 miles... Actually not horrible, but not a screaming deal.

4. There is no adaptive cruise- you might be thinking the adaptive suspension?

Of course they are making the money on the trade value imo

Why is the car used with only 2800 miles? Demo? Lots of problems? Buy back?

I am always suspect about a used car.

I'm using the MSRP as an attempt to compare the used one I'm looking at vs a new one. Obviously I would not use MSRP when negotiating for a new purchase. I agree with you 100%.

1. I didn't know new X5's could be bought for $500-$1000 over cost. Very good to know.

2. I agree with you on this point also. I'm not limited to buying from the dealer. This one just happened to be at the dealer. I told myself I would only by CPO if I wasn't buying new but apparently this one is too new to certify.

3. My CA said the eco credit is no longer available....only the $1800 federal tax credit. Did I get bad information?

I am always suspect about a used car.

This is a concern of mine as well. Apparently it was a demo vehicle at another dealership in another state. If that was the case, why didn't that dealer sell the vehicle at their dealership. Maybe a dealer trade?

The service history shows replacing a steering component (not sure the exact part) but was clean other than that. Nonetheless, the current dealer has had this for sale is 3/22 and dropped the price 3 times now. It makes me wonder why it hasn't sold yet.

You are the second one that has mentioned the $4500 eco credit. I need to look into that. If that is still available, I'll probably just order a new one.
