Nav DVD not starting up with car
Seems like with increasing frequency, the nav DVD is not starting up when I start the car (09 X5d). I normally keep the map up in the assistant window but when it does not start, the assistant window defaults to the trip computer. When I switch to the Navigation screen on the iDrive, it says "please insert DVD"
If I eject the DVD and reinsert all works again. One time of this I figured a random event. Now its nearly every time I start the car. Thinking the drive may be going bad? I doubt the DVD itselft would go bad as I have never ejected it other than recently to reset the system. Car goes in Monday for other stuff, so add this to the list. Anyone else with similar symptoms and fix?

Known issue. I had it happen to me and so have several other members.
The DVD drive is bad and should be replaced. I had it done under warranty, no problem. If you do a search, you find several threads on this. Good Luck |

My navigation has been doing the same thing off and on for the last three months. I just got the car back from the first service and asked them to look at the nav system for the issue. They told me that BMW is aware of the problem and will have a software fix in less than 45 days. Dont know if that is true but that is what I was told.
No other issues with the car after 15 months in service.

I had the exact same problem with ours. The dealer replaced the drive under warranty. It's all OK now.

Exactly the same thing here. Can anyone please let me know the SIB or similar official note so I can communicate with my dealer much easier in order to get the dvd drive replaced.
I want to spare myself from having them updating sw first, testing the car few times and than finaly realizing to exchange the drive. thanks |

I just had to have mine replaced two weeks ago as of then I don't believe there was any service bulletins, but they replaced it no questions asked. I kept having to take the disk in and out each time I got in the car. Since they did the software update, and replaced it no more issues.

Great, so car wont "reproduce problem" at the dealer. Its been doing it daily for me so the dealer doesnt want to do anything. I really am not excited about picking up the car knowing its still "broken." Symptoms seem really straight forward to me and I dont feel like I'm asking for a freebie or anything - just want to be able to use the nav without ejecting and reinserting the dvd every time I get in the car.
frustrated...

That's really annoying. My car started doing this exact same thing last week. Taking it to the dealer in a couple weeks to get it looked at as well.

Hi guys,
I was wondering if there is any follow-up to this issue? My Nav unit is getting clearly and progressively worse - basicaly it is always maximum 10 minutes after each start and the dvd reader stops reading the disc. I have to take the disc in and out few times before it gets to work again....yet only for about 10 mins again... so basicaly nav is useles. The best would be if there is some SIB for this? Preferably for German market )
