Paint Peeling- No longer covered
Tried to get by dealer to replace the left side "strut" of my '08 X5 4.8's steering wheel that has begun peeling and he advised BMW is no longer coveriung under warranty as of Jan 1. Strange since they covered my '06 M5 a few months ago and it is definetly a manufacturing defect (painted plastic) and apparently has been going on for years. Anyone else having the same issue?

That would be a manufacturers defect for sure. Unless of course they can provide proof that you caused it to peel off or find the pack of trolls living in your X5!

Go to another dealer... Others have had this problem and had the pieces replaced under warranty.

To be clear, the 2010 warranty states the following items are excluded:
"Items which are subject to wear and tear or deterioration due to driving habits or conditions, such as brake pads/linings, brake discs, clutch disc, pressure plate, filters, upholstery, trim and chrome items, paint finish, drive belts, glass, and similar items, are specifically limited to defects in material or workmanship" So is the peeling a normal wear and tear, or a defect in the material? Sounds like it is subject to interpretation, AND bmw may be revising policies.... |

That's covered under the Free Maintenance program, not the warranty... two separate programs with separate rules.

That's a little confusing, isn't it? If brakes, rotors, discs are covered under the 4year/50k maintenance, but not covered under warranty....what's going to keep BMW from not paying? Can't they just say it's not under warranty?

What is wrong with people? Re: brakes, rotors, discs It is covered under the maintenance plan, it is not covered under the warranty. They will rightly say "It is not covered under warranty but is covered under our maintenance plan". Very few people will be confused. If a rotor BREAKS, then it IS covered under the warranty since it did not 'wear out', but actually failed due to a defect.... |
