Mobile phones usually state the specifc bluetooth profile and version they comply with.

BMW apparently don't think it is important to state which bluetooth profiles their system complies with.

If they did this, it would save everyone alot of trouble.

I went to a friend's house this morning, on my way home, sound went south again, and since im just 5 miles away from the dealer, i decided to swing by and looked for my SA... they hooked up my X to their computer/scanner looking for codes, found nothing...

after waiting for an hour, SA told me they are going to open a PUMA case and i need to bring back my X on Monday... so for now, thats all i know, should have more details by Monday, will post back here...

Hope something in this helps (at least the phone side of this thread).
Red,

Sorry man, I clicked the link in your 1st post, saw the Verizon page w/all the phones listed and went away thinking this is just a confused link w/informationless Verizon page listing phones. But just read your second post saying to click the phone links and uuuu.... aaaaaa.... yea!... that's what I am talkin about! Very cool link indeed!

The only thing now is that it will be he said she said situation since Verizon appears to be presenting List B of phones they say the manufacturers say work w/the cars listed... and BMW has their own ancient List A of 10 crap phones that they claim are the only ones that will work in the car, with 7 of them no longer available.

Verizon unfortunately does ultimately defer to the car manufacturer as the supreme authority on whether the phone you want to get will work in your car or not, and we all know how they all "get out of their way" [sic] to help out the people who pay big bucks for their cars. However, since there is a List B now, w/much greater level of detail on compatibility than List A, I am somewhat heartened that there might actually be chance in hell that I could get a decent phone to work in my car.

Many thanks for that info!

On a slightly more mundane note, I have ended 1st week of testing of my car after I got it back from service. They have advised me that I should not only not pair the phone, to the car, but to turn off the Bluetooth trasceiver in the phone! Meaning of course that I can't even use a headset . But... I am a patient man... and aspire to keep my cool especially in impossible to win situations such as this one... (got good training @ home on a daily basis ). So, after I professed my opinion that the Bluetooth story is Bravo Sierra I have set out to prove them wrong. Basically since they have the sound not cutting out on them I decided to bite my lip and drive for a week w/Bluetooth turned off to see what happens. If it works, then I turn it up a notch - turn the Bluetooth back on in the phone and drive another week, then up another notch - start using a headset etc. until I arrive back at where I started - using the phone paired to the car. Even if it only works for 3 months at a time before it makes the system start cutting out at least I will have a pattern and will know what to do.

So... week 1 - phone in the car, Bluetooth turned off in the phone, no pairing on either side (phone or the car). Result - no cutting off. Started week 2 - with white knuckles and shaking hands I looked left, then right and then sat up straight so that noone on the outside could actually see what I am doing... Then I made my move... reached for the phone and protecting my balls w/one hand turned the Bluetooth transceiver ON in the phone w/the other! This has happened 5 hrs ago and so far no damnation has been officially unleashed on this citizen... but the week is young, we shall see!

I will keep updates from the trenches as often as humanly possible! But I warn you... if you plan to spill the beans to the authorities about my plan and forbidden activities in the car... I know people... ha ha ha... muha ha ha ha...

Sounds like progress... my sa had a case w/NA opened as well... sadly they were the ones saying that I should get a different phone before talking to them...

Just to chime in...

I also think your problem isn't phone related, but some intermittent audio connection. I've been blown off (for lack of a better term) by dealers more times than I can count with idiot excuses like that including exact ones about the "wrong phone" even when the phone was working perfectly (perfect bluetooth connection, stored phone book, etc)

FWIW here is BMW's latest list on phone compatibility, hope it helps. (see last post)

Thanks Meister,

Unfortunately at the bottom of page 2 of the doc it states:

"This document applies to all countries except

the USA, Canada
, PR China, Japan and Korea.
For product information about tested mobile
phones in the markets USA, Canada

and PR
China

use the following links to the internet:
USA:

http://www.bmwusa.com/bluetooth
Canada:

http://www.bmw.ca/bluetooth
PR China: http:/www.bmw.cn/bluetooth"

So... basically it redirects me to the idiot phone list on the never current BMWUsa site.

Yeah I know about that clause, but honestly just ignore it. The USA site as you correctly state is idiotic, never current, and doesn't even remotely try to keep up with any kind of half ass reasonable standard. It is however the best that we have to go by and given that the phone and it's software version are listed, as long you meet those standards you have a better than average chance of success. If all phones can achieve compatibility with the bluetooth standard then I don't see why they can't be compatible with the BMW setup? Given that BMW sells millions of cars and there are maybe 15 phones introduced each year by the big 4 phone brands (Motorola, Nokia, Sony, Blackberry) with maybe 4-5 phones from the lesser brands (Apple, HTC, Samsung, Palm) that's less than 100 phones per year. And BMW can't test 100 phones a year for compatibility? Give me a freakin' break.

OP, I agree with all those saying it's not the phone. My phone is NOT on BMW's approved list and yet it and my audio system work just fine. By the way, FWIW, mine is also a 2010 X5d delivered back in November.

What I find most disturbing about this is BMW's reluctance, one more time, to admit that there's something wrong with their product, and blaming the problem instead on something related to the customer. In other threads, many are reporting that BMW blames the X5 battery drainage issue on driver habits like keeping the car locked (or unlocked depending on who you read) when parked, not driving long enough distances, not pressing the stop/start button twice etc. all ridiculous excuses. In this instance, the same thing is happening with BMW blaming the customer's choice of phone, an equally ridiculous excuse.

I think it is our responsibility as customers to flood BMW with letters of complaint when stuff like that happens. Anytime someone takes a car to the dealership for a problem and they are given some ridiculous explanation basically shifting the responsibility onto the customer, a letter should go to BMW NA. Maybe, once they have heaps of letters on their desks, they might actually own up to their defective product and do something about it, other than blaming the customer that is!

I suggest you take these matters up directly with senior management in BMW NA.

Escalating further at dealer level will only get you so far.

Finding a responsible/senior manager in BMW and talking directly to them is usually far more effective that writing letters which get form-gerenated responses.
