As far as the guy pointing out that SUVs are just naturally going to have poor fuel economy ... You're living in the past Sir. It doesn't have to be like that and current diesel engines go along way to making that point. Natural next steps would be mating the diesel engine with an electrical motor, which some manufacturers have already started to announce.
How in the world am I living in the past? How can anyone expect a gas engined SUV that weighs in excess of 5000lbs to get good gas mileage...thats why they made the diesel for larger trucks and SUV's in the first place! You're comparing apples to oranges. Now if that same SUV has a diesel engine w/ a turbo, of course its going to get better gas mileage, but as I said...were not comparing apples and oranges here. I had an obnoxiously lifted F350...44' tires, 4.56 gears, larger turbo, etc when I was still living in Bothell. That truck still got 18mpg while rolling those huge tires, not to mention their weight and mass on top of an already heavy truck. Comparing a turbo diesel I6 vs an all motor V8 is like expecting the 4.4 X5 to be as fast as or similar gas mileage as a 4.4 540...two entirely different cars, weights, gearing, etc. Just because they share the same badge and platform doesn't mean their anything close to being the same car. A gas vs diesel X5 is no exception. You Sir, have been enlightened

I've seen 29 mpg on a trip I took which was 99% highway. I get about 22-23 mpg in the city.

OK, but as a counterpoint, on our last road trip with our SUV, fully loaded and cruising at 120 km/hr through the Rockies, we got 30 mpg (Imperial). OK, so that is an X3 and not an X5. But it also isn't a diesel, and it doesn't have direct injection or a turbocharger (both of which would help mileage, whether it was diesel or gasoline). It also has the bonus of a manual transmission, which the diesels can't get. I got to use cheaper fuel, and didn't have the oily smell when filling it up. It accelerates quicker than the X5 diesel. It only tows 3500, not 6000 lbs.

My point is that vehicles need to get much better fuel efficiency. Putting a diesel in an overweight vehicle justs makes it a mediocre performer. If manufacturers would make lighter vehicles, diesels would make sense as part of that equation. What the X5 diesel is doing is allowing those who are in love with large bloated sport utilities to hang on to them for a few years longer.

1. You might want to independently confirm you new curb weight.

2. Have we answered YOUR question? Clearly you SHOULD sell the armored and buy a non-bulletproof vehicle- if your current choice is too expensive for you to fuel and to maintain as you complain of in your opening post.

Good Luck

On my 3.0d : 22,4 mpg with 40% city / 40% road / 20% highway.
24,7 mpg on highway long trip (between 130 and 160 km/h).

Not so bad compared to the weight & performances of the vehicle.
With my very light Lotus Elise, it's 31 mpg despite serious driving !

Just reset my mpg thingy a week ago and since then have been driving a mix of city and highway at posted speed limits or following flow of traffic. No agressive driving and I got an average of 17.4 mpg. Was previously on 14.5 mpg, which must have been calculated over a long period of time.
