Complaining about an SUV's MPG, let alone w/ a 4.8l is like buying a Prius and complaining that it's not fast. It's one or the other

That's why I didn't get the 4.8 -- made no sense to me when you get about the same performance out of the 35d. Averaging about 19-20 MPG with mostly city driving and 275 all-season tires. Should be some posts in this forum with people quoting their 35d MPGs.

How the HECK do you drive? LOL. I drive aggressively and it's maxed at 14MPG. You should really have your X checked out.

Im ordering a xdrive50 and I expect my gas mileage to be around that... It seems that if you want the space and performance the low mpg rating is what you have to expect. Morw data points: my current v6 e70 gets around 14 in the city... my previous land rover got 11mpg... The fx45 before that was in the 14-16 area as well

I had a '07 4.8 and got about 12 mpg in the city if I tried hard to be fuel efficient. I loved the car overall so when the lease was up, got a 35d. The power is similar although the experience (mostly sound, some of the urgency when you floor the V8) is different. I'm now getting 19-20 mpg driving the same places.
Overall I'm happy with the diesel. It's also true that the '10 has some electronic toys that are an improvement over the early '07 (back-up camera, new idrive, electric rear hatch). Financially it made sense for me as the diesel was cheaper and I was at the end of my lease anyways. In your case, you'll have to factor in the depreciation or lease buy out into your decision.

Our X35D is still new, but we are getting around 19 MPG in the city. Hills are a big factor- not sure where you live, but even mild hills really cut into the mpg. We live in the hills around Portland and our other SUV's get around 12-13 MPG (V8 ML) so if you have some steep hills you are not far off that number. Our neighbor with a Range Rover gets around 11-12.

No need to bash the OP for questioning the mileage of a V8 SUV - why shouldn't he expect to get approx. the rated mileage for this vehicle?
I get over 15 mpg, mostly city. And that's without trying - could do better if I babied it. You should have yours checked out - 10.3 is ridiculous unless you drive like a madman. Also, have you manually checked your MPG? I wouldn't necessarily trust the on board computer.
