Yesterday morning I got CEL come on (all of the sudden on my way to work)... Drove straight to my BMW service department. Today got a call - turbo-intercooler hose leaking, they ordered part and should get it installed tomorrow.

No other symptoms - no oil leaks, no changes in engine's behavior (power, torque, etc were normal).

Funny that the 1st loander (a 535i) died on me too (low coolant, engine went into limp mode - did not allow to spin off above 2K rpm)... Now I know what the "limp" mode feels like (it is when honda civic with 4 passengers passes you on the highway entrance ramp and you can't do a thing about it )

Can I say I found this humorous?

1. "All of a sudden"? What, do they sometimes come on slowly, maybe fade in like a slow dimmer?

2. "On the way to work".... So going home, or to lunch, or just driving around aimlessly, are entirely different CEL situations?

Hope it resolves

I appreciate your humor and nitpicking to wording, but it was sudden to me, and I was late to important client meetings (twice! - because next day's morning the loaner broke on me on the way to work), so wasnt that funny when you are presenting, 20 people are waiting for you to show up...

Sounds like a different issue. Mine as well as well as the 2 others on this thread had oil leaking through a bad seal on the charge air hose. Per Ard's replies, why there was oil in there in the first place is a concern, and hopefully they just didn't put a seal to contain oil that isn't supposed to be there in the first place.....Interestingly, when I look on OEM.com with the part numbers that dmfelger provided, they show different part numbers for the seal on X5 units produced before 4/09......Makes me wonder if they realized they had a defective part and changed it. I bought mine 2/09...Hmmmmm.

Well, sounds like your problem is with intercooler hose, which is different. Mine did not kick off a CEL. I just noticed the oil on the ground.....

Good luck!
