I see no mechanic posting in response to you theory. Most real mechanics skip thread like these in which people cast about trying to correlate at CEL (which can be set by 100 or so faults) with a possible cause... How about "bad gas"? Always a perennial favorite when a CEL occurs after a fill up.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water: I can be acerbic and sarcastic, but you'll find 'correct' on occasion...

I love when people don't know all facts and think they have to resort to insults. This was NOT where I posted this issue!!!! The advise was given on ANOTHER thread, I simply came back to this one to update anyone who was watching and looking for advice.
I hope you feel better when you insult others.

It could have been bad gas, but I only use the same to Shell stations and premium. The car was sitting with the front end on jack stands for over 24 hours and started a couple times while at that angle, maybe dirt from the tank . I don't know, like you said, 100 or more causes. I will get the code read when I get a chance. Will it still register on a standard code reader from say advanced auto parts? I really don't want to give the stealership a hundred bucks to read a code.

And you would have had to pay $150/hr for her.
Ah, hmmm, there certainly are more expensive ones than that (so I hear).

I don't recall discussing a sensor covered in oil as a cause, more likely oil on a breather, but I could be wrong. I did agree, above, that the steering leak and its repair could be related to the CEL. The most likely connection, in my mind, would be due to something in the evaporative emission control system being disturbed when the steering hose was being changed. I expect electrical connections are sufficiently sealed.

Striving for correct information without the acerbic comments...

You have a link to that other thread where "mechanics" have said it must have been a fouled sensor that was subsequently "washed off" by the snow and water? Did quick search and could find nothing....

But anyways.... buy a code reader- better yet a 'Peake' BMW specific reader. If your car is out of warranty it is invaluable. Even if you are not a DIYer, it will let you be better prepared to walk into a shop.

Thanks, I have started the search for a code reader this year. The more I can do myself, the better.
