That would be covered by insurance anyway...right?

Not always . If you tried to run it through insurance it would raise your rates.

I also can turn my X5 in with bald tires and they will replace them for no cost to me.

Do you people not have automobile insurance?!?!?

I had a $50 deductible on my Comprehensive coverage... it costs a few hundred bucks more a year...and given that I do two windshields a year among 5 cars, it pays for itself.

Not to mention deer collisions, or other comprehensive claims. (everything except hitting something). And Comp claims are not 'chargeable', in that they will not increase your rates. (edit: not all states, so check yours)

Collision I keep at 500.

So I guess I don't know why people buy 2,3 warranties for cars. Christ with 5 cars I'd go broke buying warranties! Why buy a 'worn tire warranty' and not just replace worn tires??? I mean what if they wear out 6 months before your lease is up?

And why do people use stupid "BMW Dealer Tire Prices" to justify their warranty purchases? You CAN patch a RFT, the tire MFG recommends it, and even if you need to replace it is ~100% more at a dealer.

better to be safe than sorry.. RFT's on 135i cost almost $500 on a single tire! luckily i have wheel and tire package. think of 20" X5 RFT's cost...

plus when my tire got damaged, im on I-84. its awesome that i drove still 86miles going home in the middle of the night.

didn't get it on my X5 but i have 19s. two days after i switched to NRFT Toyos i picked up a nail. $250 and done.

wife's 328i has low profile 17s, she blew out a sidewall on a RFT. don't ask, i don't know how.

thankfully i bought the warranty on her car. i suspect before the warranty runs out i will use it again.

Well for us "single folk", who don't have multiple cars, it's not as much of burden on the pocket book.

Yes we know the dealer price is crazy--I always went to Discount Tire for replacements on my '01 X5 but still these 20s on the e70 are not cheap--even at DT I think the rears are $500.

PS I was really hoping for more of a Simon Cowell response

no it wouldn't. Glass is a comprehensive claim, comp claims almost always have no bearing on rates. And in California if you have full glass coverage (about $25/year) there's no deductible.

Got my X5 yesterday and paid 1300 for tire and wheel warranty. Didn't have time to go through the CD at the dealership so bought it with an intention of cancelling after careful review.

Came back home and saw that the Bridgestones, which my X5 has, don't have road hazard protection:

This is what the pdf says:

WHAT THIS LIMITED WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER

This Limited Warranty does not cover the following:

1. Tire damage or irregular wear due to:

A. Road hazards, including, without limitation: Puncture,
cut, impact break, stone drill, bruise, bulge, snag, etc.
B. Improper use or operation, including, without limitation:

Improper inflation pressure, overloading, tire/wheel
spinning, use of an improper wheel, tire chain damage,
misuse, misapplication, negligence, tire alteration, or for
racing or competition purposes.

Looks like only dunlop and michellin offer that. My luck I got bridgestones.

I just don't get the fear.

1300 will just about buy 4 replacement tires- AND THE REPLACEMENTS WILL HAVE ROAD HAZARD PLANS ON THEM. (Unless people are dumb enough to buy tires at a BMW dealer...)

So if you do not have a claim, you've wasted 1300. yes, peace of mind and all that... But worse case you buy 4 tires ($1160 for mich latitude tour HP **WITH** road hazard). You are within a few bucks of the insurance cost.

All the tire road hazard buys you is protection on the tires until the first required replacement...once you replace tires you can get the added tire road hazard plans. They are 40 per tire! 1300 is just mind boggling.

Thousands of people buy a new car, drive 40k miles, never get a flat (or if they do they patch it) and then replace the tires. No claims.

This 'gotta replace RFTs' and 'tires are SOOOO expensive' are both concepts promulgated by BMW dealerships to sell warranties...and when people dont have warranties to just bend them over. Add on the 'gotta match tread on AWD cars' and there you go. (FYI- NO warranty covers the replacement of the other tires that dealers tell you need replacement so as to no 'ruin the differential')

Finally, this analysis excludes breaking rims. If you are a rim breaker, disregard the analysis
