newbie needs some advice
i pull out of my driveway to hear a click click BOOM followed by the sound of metal bits and gears falling onto the ground. i found out that a bearing inside the rear differential has come apart allowing the diff to go sideways inside the houseing wich split it in two and the forced the differential housing apart and shattering it. the car has 81,000km's (50k miles) and it is 1000 km;s off warranty it ran out a few days ago. getting to my question i am new to bmw and was wondering if anyone know if there is a way for warranty to take care of this since it is so close to when it came off. if not them my second question would be does anyone know where i can source a cheap replacement to get the car rolling again so i can trade it in on an X5M. although i am starting to wonder if that will be a nicer faster headache lol. any information would be appreciated |

Ouch. Best of luck to you on this one. I would suggest a call to BMWNA to see if they can push for some warranty help on your behalf. That being said, I would not hold my breath in anticipation of any help.
4 years ago I had a problem outside of warranty with a BMW dealer that essentially destroyed the motor on my 740IL, by dropping a motor cover clip into one of the exposed valves while doing a repair to the car. Engine was shot. Dealer claimed they did not do the damage and that the motor did the damage itself by hyrdolocking. Bottom line BMWNA did nothing for me other than saying they were sorry this happened and that they could not force a dealer to do anything for me. Yes, I ended up suing the dealer and settling out of court. Good luck.

How good is your relationship with the Service Adviser at the BMW dealership>>> He has the power to press your case and ask BMW to help..if he gets behind it, BMW may do it. If he is not a vocal proponent, your chances go way down....

Unless the settlement prohibits it, could you identify the dealer? It would be useful to people in the Chicago area to know. I'm thinking there are a couple of likely prospects, one in the city and a small dealer in the suburbs.

It was a rather exhaustive process. Once the dealer denied any wrong doing I demanded to see the parts. Took photo's and sent them to many mechanics (non-dealer as other BMW dealers wanted nothing to do with it). Found some great indy mechanics via BMWCCA and a very reputable local guy to offer his opinion in front of the lawyers on my behalf. That was the icing.

I had the passenger's seat replaced (bad heater element) and DVD drive for the NAV replaced free of charge even though the car was about 10k out of warranty. The service manager explained there's no way those parts should need replacing at 60k. I think its all up to your stealership, good luck and let us know what happens.

Well I went in to my dealer and talked to my service advisor and he was very confused and shocked at this and apparently because of the warranty claim I had opened before my car came off warranty but I haven't had time to drop it off yet. They can put this under the same warranty claim with no problem so its all taken care of.
After this happened I found a lot of horror stories about bmws fallin apart and not being warranted it kinda had me scared but this helps and I will be looking at the X5M but unfortunately this truck will be sold as it has been in the shop about a dozen times in 6 months always for the most ridiculous things |
