[QUOTE=masayahin;829993]X5M
- Beastly fast (M Power)
- More $$$ than any other X5

X5 5.0 M-option
- Beastly fast (not faster than X5M but seems faster than my E46M3, I do like to drive it more than the E46M3, I guess its an age thing)
- Less $$$ than X5M
- 3rd row option available (might hold the resale value???)
- flash it with Dinan and your closer to X5M power

I always find it humorous when people assume or communciate that all the X5M is, is a faster 50. This is not the case at all and not what makes the M different and in my opinion far better than the 50 or 4.8 or any other ordinary X5. After having both it is easy to understand and even easier to understand when you get some seat time in both. It is brakes, suspension, steering, torque differential on the rear drive plus so much more. It takes one time to hear the burp in M mode on an upshift and you will get it.
But without having considerable seat time or owning one, please don't do the OP disservice and not qualify your comments as opinion with no real foundation or experience.
To the OP..Get the M , get a used M there are plenty out there with under 10K miles that are thousands off new. You will never regret it, trust me. If you go buy a 50 you will always wonder and always second guess yourself. If you buy the M I highly doubt you will ever say, "boy I wish i got the 50".....

I don't think I'd get the AD if I got the X5 50i...it's a costly option that I think I could do w/o (although admittedly it would be nice to have)

Just a reminder,
- If youre getting a Entertainment/DVD package, opt for the headrest or get an aftermarket and DO NOT get the center console DVD/TV as it is very low (kids hated it as they easily get nausea watching compared to previous car) and it will bother your elbow
- if getting the X5 M-option, have the roof rails or tow hitch installed from factory if youre planning to haul more than the rear compartment. doing this later is a pain.

Personal opinion having driven it once in a while
- Overhead Display is amazing (keeps my speed below limit)
- Auto-H is a luxury
- Active seat/Massage chair is great for long travel (sorry driver only)
- I like the leather dash and hope it keeps up to the sun (forget the sunshade as it is very big and a hassle to place in the windshield)
- Engine/Exhaust pumps my adrenaline (everytime I drive the E46M3, i wish it could be as aggressively loud as the E70)
- Took all the options/packages we could get and cant say bad on any

Wife drive's it all the time and says its a great car. gets complimented all the time.

GL on whatever you decide. regardless, you still win coming from E46 to E70.
thanks...I'm not sure I'd get the Dinan software as I assume that would have a significant effect on gas mileage...(1 of the reasons I'd go for the 50i over the M) yeah, i'd probably just get a couple of iPads! the roof rails are a must...what do you mean by auto-h?

thanks man, the biggest thing holding me back it the abysmal gas mileage...it hasn't been a big factor in previous car-buying decisions but the X5Ms is absolutely horrendous!

Gas would be the least of my concerns regarding the X5M, it is not like 5.0 is good on gas. The biggest question really is: why one would need a truck as bad as X5M while 5.0 is all you need.

sounds like you're recommending the 5.0?

True that. But I'd call the X5M a want more than a need.

PS: I'm averaging 17+ with the X5 50i. I get 20 on the highway and even with a lot of commuting, I can still see a 17-18 average.

Whoa... someone's testosterone way up there

Again my opinion was based on my experience and was just laying basic facts.

going back to the OP,
Any E70 is already a good car to begin with. I've considered buying X5M before but realize that we cannot fully utilize its potential as it would look awkward to bring it to the track and Pushing its limit in the regular road is hazardous (putting yourself and everyone else in harms way).

IMHO,

Option 1 - If you want a family hauler and fun to drive and have the cash then go with X5M

X5M > any other E70....... (both are truck/suv/sav)

Option 2 - If you want a family hauler and fun to drive and mid-priced then get the X5 (every X5 E70 model has its own advantages) plus the $$$ you save for getting the non-X5M will let you buy a E36M3 or E30 (S50'd swap) that you can build for track days or pleasure drive is much more fun.

X5M < any other E70 + (E36M3 or S50'd E30 for track days and personal drive)........ is like truck < truck+toy/track car+$$$ saved+so much win

I went to option 2 due to practicality and kept both my E46M3 and toy/track car, with the toy/track car, since it is cheap and less electronics, I play/mess/mod/fix and importantly being a Dad, I show/teach my kids everytime on how to do it, at a young age all my kids know the use for the most of my tools.... priceless!

more toys = more fun

GL and always be thirsty my friend

I suppose I'll chime in since I am in a similar dillema... My limiting factor is storage space. I don't have the luxury of having an SUV and a "fun car" at this time. So, I need to wrap them both into the same package. Is the X5M a sports car, nope. But it may satisfy that niche while offering the utility of the SUV. I'd love to park a 911 TT in my garage, but that would put one of our other cars in storage or in the street (which is not doable in my area).
My point is that the "get a 50 and an older M3" is not always an option.

Dinan (an option but did not get it as Wife needs to drive slower not faster)

iPads are better substitute to the center console DVD. Agree you win.

Roof rails, do it when ordering to save you time and money.

Auto-H is a feature that Automatically holds the brake for you once full stop.
Basically when this button is applied when you come to a halt say at a set of lights and the car is stationary the brake automatically applies and you can take your foot off the pedals the car will not move until you apply the accelerator again. I liked it especially in traffic conditions.

when ordering dont forget to ask for the plastic floor liner (great for winter snow/salt & all kids mess) and not the weather rubber mats. my sales guy gave this to me for free plus I got some Alpina items from him also free.... he he he
