Subsequent to my original post, I moved the USB stick in the 2012 from the glovebox to the arm rest (location of USB stick in 2008) but that made no difference.
I then tried to update my software and got the latest file from the BMW web but my X5 says the file is not compatible. Frustrating as I wanted this new music for a trip of 3K that starts tomorrow morning.

No, they are all audio files. I am talking about MP4 vs MP3 but the full extension is "MPEG-4 Audio".

Do they have a .m4a extension?
As long as they don't contain DRM they should play ok. Perhaps reformat your flash drive (fat32). |

They do have a n4a extension so I will try another USB stick.
Edited to say that the problem persists with 2 other USB sticks.

My work-around was to burn the MP4s to a cd but I would prefer having everything going through the USB stick. There are enough distractions with the new Escort LIVE and BMW Apps.

Edited to say at least 3 of the audio files fail to play even on the cd.

I just wanted to report that the software update now available on the BMW web now allows me to play all the m4a files on the USB stick when used in the armrest.
These same m4a files still are not read when the USB stick is used in the glovebox. In addition, there are still at least two of these files burned to a cd that will not play correctly. On the other hand, everything plays fine when my iP4S is connected through the BMW apps.
