But look the aftermarket responded and came up with a collapsible repair pipe to cut the bill down to around $1500.... THAT WORKS! Get hooked up with a quality reasonable independant BMW repairer and spending money to have a E70 4.8i is WORTH IT

would be a good time to join the "vendor" club... we like our vendors and do sponsor them by buying their products...

BMW is cutting edge... not a Toyoto appliance. Yup you gotta spend money to fix the things that break but to me BMW whole experience is worth it. Sure $10K to fix a coolant leak is CRAZY... |

Sorry, to drag up an old thread but I get so sick of reading this misinformed marketing crap. BMW is a car manufacturer. They make cars with the same heating, cooling, lubrication, all the systems you need to make a car work. They are not magic or "cutting edge" in most of their applications. They just make VERY poor design choices and use inferior materials in many applications. They have a history of systemic failures of components and systems (transmissions in the X3, door handles on many models, sunroofs across all pano models, etc). They do not do a good job with their engineering and manufacturing for long term reliability. I hate to burst your bubble, but you're just repeating what a salesperson or brochure is telling you. Grab some tools and start disassembling, and you will quickly find all the same components that make that Chevy run too. |

^^ Interesting product.
Wonder how long IT lasts....given the heat cycles that part sees, I'd be concerned with the middle o-ring as it is the sole source of the preload onto the two other seals. Plus there is a split in that shim that jams the front washer into place.... At ~$500 they are making a killing.... |

Joined the Valley Leak Club...
My 2008 4.8i is now a member of this club, and I would have preferred to not join...
She's in the shop having a Valley Leak repaired right on time at 69k miles... $3400. To make it even better, the Thrust Bushings were cracking, so they are also being replaced... $750. It's a big hit, no doubt, but I can't piture driving anyting else. Just love this car way to much... ![]() John in Indy.

what are the symptoms to the infamous valley coolant leak? Does it leak internally or run down the motor and on to the ground?

Just a Low Coolant Warning...
I had a low coolant warning when starting up for the first time one morning, and again a couple of days later. Took it to my Indie (in Indy) shop to have them top it off. It was 1/2 Gallon low, and the noticed a very small amount of coolant running down the back side of the block.
There was never a puddle or drip under the car, no smell, nothing that pointed to this. The leak is very slow and gets burned off by the heat from the block and headers/exhaust before getting to the bottom of the car to drip... A system pressure check confirmed it. Now I'm without my X for up to 2 weeks.
