Like you I service my BMW and an A4 (Built A4 around KO4 setup). Did you have problem refilling coolant? Were there special tools you needed? I understand the new pipe to be $600.00 or so, where did the remaining $400.00 go? Thanx for the picture. |

You'll have the throttle body off the engine, so it's a good opportunity to clean it with an appropriate cleaner. When you take the valley pan off, there will likely be a bunch of coolant surrounding the pipe underneath. A fluid extractor made it's removal a quick and easy job. I used a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade to cut most of the way through the pipe, and a bare hacksaw blade to carefully finish the cut. The pipe is aluminum, so it's easy to get through. The expanded kit comes with a plastic stick to help seat the new o-rings and a wire brush. I used a dental mirror and a tool used to remove rubber donuts from orthodontic brackets to remove the old o-rings. A shop-vac and some compressed air will help clean up the engine so there is less debris to fall down by the valves when the manifold comes off, and will help clean up any that does. My intake manifold was spotless, the injectors looked great, and I cleaned up a little bit of carbon buildup around the valves. The most challenging part of the job was to open the plastic clips on the electrical connectors without breaking them, and to access the rear bolts of the manifold. Adding coolant was as simple as pouring it in and running the engine with the heater on for 15 mins with the cap off the expansion tank. |

If the electrical box clips are like they were on the 4.4L (M62) engine, you can just give the box a sharp tug after spraying the clips with a lubricant and they will pop off. Saves a lot of work.

The part that fails is the rubber seal that BMW bonds to the front of the pipe. The pipe itself is aluminum, and will outlast the vehicle.

A week later and coolant was pouring all over my driveway again. This time it was a crack in the coolant expansion tank. As you can see in the picture, I scuffed the area around the crack with some sandpaper and then tried to seal it with epoxy putty until my replacement tank arrived. The putty did nothing.
Also I mentioned previously that my coolant drain plug had crumbled when I tried to remove it. To get the threaded part of the plug out, I first drilled a hole up though the plastic plug and let the coolant drain. Then I heated it up a bit with a heat gun, and used a spiral flute extraction bit to remove the rest. Last edited by Alamento; 11-20-2013 at 09:15 PM. |

Here is a suggestion to prevent a cooling system blowout in your N62. Drain the BMW coolant(Manufactured by Valvolene/Ashland). Use Pentosin NF or Motul Inugel Expert Ultra. Neither of these has Ethylhexanoic Acid which is a plasticizer. Remove 2 bar coolant recovery cap and throw it in the trash. Then buy/install a GENUINE BMW 1.4 bar cap from a 2007 335i. Fill coolant recovery tank to minimum mark to leave room for expansion. Also use only Genuine BMW water pumps with composite rotor as these are there to prevent electrolysis and bearing wear, not for cheapness. Every aftermarket coolant cap I have come across does not function properly as well. If the 2 arrows do not line up when locking down the cap, do not use it. Every defective aftermarket cap I have seen including Febi brand are made in China. Buy your coolant cap at the stealer, don't be cheap.

I would like to add BMW is claiming their coolant is lifetime fill. This is marketing bs. Once the warranty is up, be ready for Armageddon. Drain and fill 5 liters of coolant from your radiator every year, use distilled water. electrolysis is your enemy when it comes to aluminum and magnesium, we are trying to minimized dissolved metals in the coolant. Make sure your battery connections are always very clean and corrosion free. This minimizes electrolysis.

Seems like I am officially a club member. Topping off coolant about once a week.
Few more questions: - replace water-pump or not - where did you get distilled water (do I really need it if I get AGA expendable pipe) - how long did it take you to do the job Alamento (hrs? AGA claims under 10) |

With or without the AGA pipe, coolant should be mixed with distilled water. I got mine at the local grocery store. I think their 10hr estimate is realistic. From start to finish, it took me a full day. I took my time and had a few beers along the way. |
