Considering 2012 X5 V6 (FL): Is this a good deal?
Hello all,
This is my first new car purchase. Ive never negotiated/bargained over the price of a car so I've asked a couple of friends & family members how they've done it & also posted in bimmerforums: some have never paid tax/tag/title (which I know the dealer just eats), some want dealer-added accessories "given free", etc. Anyways, below is what Ive chosen, what the dealer quoted me, & a screenshot from bmwconfig of MSRP vs invoice. Thanks in advance for everyone's opinion & advice. ![]() And he gave me $2000 off... ![]() ![]() I talked with one of the dealers this morning: Theyre pretty firm on basing the price on the MSRP (~$69500). The most theyre willing to come off of that is a $2000, as stated above, due to a "personal rebate". He did not specify whether or not this was a factory-to-dealer rebate (but I forgot to ask him this). He balked at the offer of invoice pricing, stating they have a 6% markup on these vehicles which by his calculation was $3000 last week (this morning he says its $4000). But it's more like $5500 as per bmwconfig. So with his $2000 rebate, he says we're just splitting the profit. The most that other dealerships I've spoken with are willing to come off is another $1000 (off of the MSRP). From what I've read across the forums, Im still aiming at invoice. Ive also decided against the extended maintenance program & am still deciding on the extended warranty. Then to the fees: They say that the DOC FEE at the lower left of the pic is based on the DOC STAMP RATE. They say that this is a fee that the bank?state? charges because I am financing the vehicle. If I were paying cash, I would not have to pay this. The OFFICIAL FEES is the new tag. And he vaguely explains that the DEALER FEES is their cost of doing business (salaries, clerkical stuff, their document/processing fees, etc.) What does everyone/anyone else think? Are what theyre saying regarding all of the fees valid? Im in no hurry for this vehicle so Im about to just put in one offer based on invoice & your opinions on their FEES. Thanks again everyone. VERY much appreciated ![]() |

You should be able to more than $2,000 off--rebates aside.

"Theyre pretty firm on basing the price on the MSRP"
Find another dealer, you should expect to pay between 500-1000 more than INVOICE. Any more you are not getting a deal.

![]() Though from having worked at a dealership before, I do know they have to charge everyone the same fees or open themselves up to a class action lawsuit. And OP, BMW has never made a V6 engine, and it's not by accident either

Bottom Line, you do your research so you know what you're buying. If you say you want a V6, you've tipped them off that you don't know what you're talking about.
Next is to get the concept out of your head that you ask them what they can sell the car to you for and you own the concept of what you are going to pay to own the car, and as has been said in this thread, you stick to it and find the dealer who wants your business and understands how you are going to purchase the car. Don't ask, tell! And I have never heard of any dealer paying taxes. Taxes are taxes. You may want to bring someone with you who has purchased several cars from dealers and who has your interests as their priority. He who has the money has the power! |

I know you're in JAX, but I've got a great guy down here in Lauderdale if you want to see what he'd do...don't want to waste his time, but maybe he coudl get you a good deal...
As well, if you look at carsdirect.com and build it there you can buy it for $66,305 - $2k over invoice without even negotiating with anyone.....they are WAYYYY too high.

TrueCar.com (don't forget to edit options & incentives, then results are in the details tab) - go in armed with invoice pricing and don't look like you've never done it before.
![]() Another way to do it is after you've decided EXACTLY what you want (go into the dealer without talking numbers), call the dealers' internet sales department. Usually these are the folks who know you've got invoice pricing in hand, shopped around, and will give you no BS pricing. "We can do X amount over invoice." Call multiple dealers, quick and easy... just show up to pick up the car.

It's a funny story as we were about 2k apart at the beginning. I made it clear that I was willing to pay 38k (I think that was the price), otherwise thanks but never mind. He called me back every day, each time getting $500 cheaper but got stuck at 38.5k. I kept telling him, "You don't understand. If you want to sell me the car for 38k, I'll take it. Otherwise never mind." A few days after he declared 38.5k was as low as he could go, and I said never mind (again), his manager called and we closed the deal for 38k. All over the phone. Their antics still amuse me to this day. |
