Well, as you surely know, there is no "one thing" that sets the CEL. All depends on the code.
While it is easy to draw a conclusion that nobody's issues are getting fixed, that is not true. Even my lemon was ultimately fixed.... We are getting ahead of ourselves, but I suspect the fix will be to replace either EGR or temp sensors, and do some reprogramming. Make sure you ask (and receive) the codes set in the DDE memory. I force the SA to write 'read and save codes, provide to Customer'.... One thing I will caution- some shops, as a matter of practice, reset the codes and THEN see what returns...often you get "we didn't find anything wrong", (Arguably, this is not a bad strategy if you are out of warranty and only want to repair issues that are 'hard failures', with constant errors.) Make sure you have a short chat with the SA that you want whatever code that was tripped to be recorded. GL A |

OK, so today after driving abut 100 KMs without any refuelling or any other change in my driving habits, the CEL decided to turn off. There has been a substantial change in the temperature today. It was -6.0 C when the light came on and today it was +18.0C (a difference of 24 degrees Celsius).
Should I still keep the appointment to go see the dealer? |

ABSOLUTELY.
The DDE software is contnuously running and comparing values, checking limits, etc....something happened to trip a code. Not a 'hard' failure, but a one or two time thing that set the code and the light. Now, you've started the car and run it a few times, the fault is no longer 'active', so the light goes out- BUT the code was stored. You want this documented AT THE VERY LEAST. If the tech is good, he will look up the codes and see if BMW has any recommended actions for this- I suspect they will. GL A PS Hope you have an appt early in the week, if later and they need a sensor, they may not get it until the following week. But given the fact that they are seeing a lot of this, the dealer may have it in stock...not much you can do, just make sure the SA knows you are being actively cool about it and not ignorantly copacetic. |

UPDATE:
I took the car in on Thursday morning and they kept it overnight as the iDrive knob (which was peeling) had to be ordered. Despite my request to put the codes on the service order they did not put the actual codes. This is what the work order say: Replaced AIR COOLER (17-51-7-805-150) as the DDE had intercooler plausibility stored but there was nothing wrong with the intercooler visually. Replaced CHARGE-AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR (13-62-8-519-444) as per service bulletin. Replaced iDRIVE KNOB (65-82-9-240-956). Changed OIL/Filter and Topped DEF. All done under warranty. I drove the car today and everything looks and feels good. Last edited by docsalr; 03-17-2012 at 09:37 AM. |

Overwhelming liklihood, there IS nothing wrong with the intercooler- it is an erroneous sensor reading that leads to the 'plausibility' code. They saw the word "intercooler" and decided that needed replacing?
Good to hear they fixed it- I think you'll be fine, the sensor and the reprogramming usually does it. (Did they do any reprogramming? Could be your car had the newest and didnt need it.) Oh, I refuse to sign off on repairs if they fail to write the codes down. Simple. The work order says 'provide codes', they provide codes. Just me... A Last edited by ard; 03-17-2012 at 12:41 AM. |

The work order says in the iDrive replacement knob section: Performed Complete Programming with CAS.
