E70 X5 Keep getting P0442 Small Evapor Leak
Over last few month... my X5 keep getting the Gas cap icon showing up half gas tank. At first, the first engine warning light would show up.. and then disappear, and then the garage would smell like gas. Arround half tank of gas, the gas cap icon would show up, and the check engine never goes away. I had dealder reset it once, and check for gas line leak.. Nothing was found. One of the explanation they told me is stop put in gas on the first click. So I did that and the check engine light will continue to show up. I been using a personal ODBC diagnosis tool to reset it everytime it shows up.. but frankly i am sick of reset the engine check every time it hit half a tank and the garage smells like gas station. The ODBC read P0442 small evap leak. and yes.. i did close the gas cap. Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated. |

gas cap error
We had this same problem on our 07 4.8. The gas cap error kept appearing.... The dealer tested the car and found out thtat there was an internal leak in the gas tank. They replaced the entire gas tank under warrenty. Apparently another E70 was in the shop with the same problem..
Good luck. Mo |

Sure would like to know how this turned out. I started a new thread just today b/c I am getting the same P0442 and CEL on my '09 X5, with strong fuel vapors after refueling. I have fueled this vehicle up a couple of times since buying it a little over a month ago, and each time I stopped fueling after the first click. No replies to my post yet, so not sure what to do. Help, please?
Also, does anyone know what the standard warranty period is for an '09 X5? And, is it longer for the fuel evap system, since it is emissions?

Any decent shop nowadays have a "smoke" machine for testing the intake and EVAP system for leaks. Finds the problem quick and easy 99% of the cases.

Cant you just tell me what hose it would most likely be and I can buy that one?

i have no idea and it is probably not a hose. It is jungle down there ( I mean the EVAP piping around the tank).
But I think there is a thread here mentioning the canister and the diagnosis pump unit. Just check around. Last edited by bawareca; 03-15-2015 at 01:35 AM. |

Get to a shop who has an Autologic. That can test all aspects of the Evap system, and perhaps better pinpoint the problem. If not, as Bawareca says, a smoke machine can be invaluable.

OK, thanks folks. I'm going to poke around for loose or cracked hoses, etc. Then if no luck, look for someone to test it. Yes, I was hoping to just hear that 3 or 4 folks on here had experienced a certain hose or something that was prone to falling off or deteriorating, which would make it a simple fix. Would hate to buy a $200 pump just hoping that will fix it and it doesn't. Also hate to spend $100 or $200 having someone test and then find out it's just a loose vacuum hose sitting in plain sight.
