Hi... I wonder if anyone has similar experience...
Over last few month... my X5 keep getting the Gas cap icon showing up half gas tank. At first, the first engine warning light would show up.. and then disappear, and then the garage would smell like gas. Arround half tank of gas, the gas cap icon would show up, and the check engine never goes away. I had dealder reset it once, and check for gas line leak.. Nothing was found. One of the explanation they told me is stop put in gas on the first click. So I did that and the check engine light will continue to show up. I been using a personal ODBC diagnosis tool to reset it everytime it shows up.. but frankly i am sick of reset the engine check every time it hit half a tank and the garage smells like gas station. The ODBC read P0442 small evap leak. and yes.. i did close the gas cap. Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated. |

gas cap error
We had this same problem on our 07 4.8. The gas cap error kept appearing.... The dealer tested the car and found out thtat there was an internal leak in the gas tank. They replaced the entire gas tank under warrenty. Apparently another E70 was in the shop with the same problem..
Good luck. Mo |

Sure would like to know how this turned out. I started a new thread just today b/c I am getting the same P0442 and CEL on my '09 X5, with strong fuel vapors after refueling. I have fueled this vehicle up a couple of times since buying it a little over a month ago, and each time I stopped fueling after the first click. No replies to my post yet, so not sure what to do.
Help, please? Also, does anyone know what the standard warranty period is for an '09 X5? And, is it longer for the fuel evap system, since it is emissions?

Any decent shop nowadays have a "smoke" machine for testing the intake and EVAP system for leaks. Finds the problem quick and easy 99% of the cases.
