All the members in the EU, Sewitzerland, Norway and Lichtenstein will be interested in this... not the rest of us with 'dubious fuel'.

To expand on Ard's post, BMW has issued a bulletin advising to NOT use LL-04 oils in North America. They don't hold up. It is believed to be due to the low initial TBN in LL-04 oils being lowered even further with our specific North American fuels, a combination of the sulphur levels and ethanol being the culprits.
Lots of posters try to buy the LL-04 oils in North America, believing that they are doing the right thing, but it is an ill-advised plan.

The whole "fuel quality" thing pisses me off...How can BMW engineers be 'surprised' by the fuel in this, the largest single market into which they sell cars?

I think the engine product development engineers would be surprised that anyone is paying attention to a 2004 oil spec developed by the BMW aftermarket team for sorting out oils that were current in 2004, knowing that both oils and fuels have changed significantly since then.

For the oil change on my mother's 325i, I'm going to try a LL-04 spec oil, see if it brings any noticeable difference in fuel consumption or driving habits. I'm well-aware of the whole TBN differences and purpose of the newer spec, but her car is generally not driven hard and I figure it's worth giving it a shot. I can easily get the Pentosin 5W-30 at O'Reillys.

It has zero effect on fuel consumption, go to a thinner oil if that is the objective.
It also doesn't matter how hard it is driven. The problem is additive depletion and subsequent oil breakdown at much less than the nominal 15,000 mile interval. As long as you change it much more frequently the engine should be fine but I fail to see any upside to the experiment. May want to try imported air in the tires (reminds me of a Blondie song) to see if it has a measurable impact on fuel consumption.

Actually I do random stuff like that (ok, not imported air) from time to time. On long trips, I'll fill up in NC in spite of their higher fuels tax because the pumps are actually regularly inspected so I can trust it to click off at the right time, and I've had some bad tanks of fuel in rural VA thanks to the lack of regulation. I'll also defer purchases of stuff so that the tax revenue goes where I want it to go. |

FYI, here is an oil analysis history using Castrol LL oil from new to the present.
