Locked out TWICE in MY 2012

Scenario: Key fob is in purse which I throw in front passenger seat (or rear). As soon as I close the door, the vehicle 'locks down' WITH THE FOB INSIDE! Once, after I buckled my toddler into his car seat and closed his door to open driver side, the SAV locked itself. I freaked out but good thing we were just in our garage so I ran back inside the house to retrieve my spare key to unlock the car. On extremely hot days, with my son inside and we are elsewhere but home, it can be VERY bad... Shouldn't the vehicle sense that the keys are inside the car? These 'ghost locking' incidents happen sporadically. With my luck, I won't be able to replicate at dealership. What is happening? Nowadays, I consciously keep driver side door open until I am literally in the car. WHAT TO DO? I've read somewhere that this a CA issue. PLEASE HELP!

With comfort access if you touch the top of the door handle near the little ridges it locks the doors so you never have to use the fob. It's in the owner's manual several time explaining how it works.

blue dragon will become famous soon enough
You could also use your BMW remote app from your smartphone to unlock the door

My wife's Prius won't lock with the exterior touch pads if there is a key inside the car. That seems like better system logic to me.

and if the cell phone is in the purse too?..

i would talk to a dealer, describe the exact scenario that you have, and have them do something... This is a seriuos liability issue for manufacturer, that if hits the Media waves, will be very bad for the manufacturer...

If my kids were in the car and the car locked itself - there would have been cops and the rescue crews breaking the glass to get the kids out...

Normally having a CA anywhere inside the car would prevent it from locking. If your X5 still locks - with 2nd remote or handle, - take it to the dealer for repairs.

Then you call BMW assist toll free number from any phone and get them to unlock.

i agree about the phone call - however, just a couple of days ago, my cell phone battery died on me, i got back to the commuter lot and was supposed to call my wife to come and pick me up... needless to say, that there are no more public phones easily available on the streets any longer, and there was nobody around on the parking lot (I got to the lot a bit earlier then normal) to "borrow" a cell phone... ended up waiting until wife decided that it was time to come and pick me up... Of course, this was not life threatening situation, so I just sat on the bench, and waited...

It just may so happen, that a phone might not be an available option...

In the meantime... why don't you just turn off the auto locking feature?

Menu- > Settings -> Door Locks -> make sure you uncheck "Lock if no door is opened"

It's on page 33 of the manual
