I tried to replicate the problem, but to no avail. When my keyfob is in the vehicle, I cannot lock the doors. No matter how many times I tried. I have CA and the "RELOCK DOOR IF NOT OPENED" feature is enabled.

Definitely something is wrong with the OP's vehicle.

I cannot duplicate your issue, but I have a theory. If your remote is in close proximity to a smartphone (probably any, but in my case an iPhone), the signal from the iPhone screws up/shuts down the signal from the remote. Very easy to duplicate and a search of this forum and any other BMW forum will produce multiple threads addressing/verifying the issue. I have to make sure to keep my iPhone and remote in separate pockets otherwise I can't unlock/lock or start the car. If you have your phone and remote in purse, this could create a scenario like you are experiencing.

I have comfort access in mine and could not open the door on the same situation.
Here is my story - took the car to the car wash, car was ON and they put it on neutral to go through automatic car was but accidentally locked the door when they closed the door. When car came on the other end, we could not open the door even though the key fob was inside the car and car was on. They had to force the door open a bit with this pump rubber thing that expands and then with a long wire they opened one of the window. That's how I got the door open.
I would have thought that if the key fob is inside the car and car is on, you'd be able to open the door by just touching the door handle with your thumb. Apparently it does not work that way; at least not in mine. Now I just keep the key in my pocket all the time but sometimes it can be annoying when you drive and tends to fall out of the pocket with no zipper. I'll live with it.

why would any engineer program the system to allow perfect strangers to walk up to you car with you sting in the running car AND OPEN THE LOCKS BY TOUCHING THE OUTSIDE HANDLE??!?!

In this case, the car thought you were still in it- the car is running, key inside- and it autolocked. Again, there is no "people detector" with this system!

I would not have allowed the yahoos to bend the door to open it....

It happened to my wife twice. Both times were almost exactly the same as the OP's story. Once we used my key to unlock it, and the other time the app saved her but. Although, she didn't try to call BMW Assist.

I told her to be more gentile when loading her purse, but we're both kind of skeptical of that fix. I cannot remember if I tried locking it from inside the vehicle with the key button, but all the tries to replicate the CA locking feature with the key inside failed.

This happened to me once, when we were camping in Canada...

Left the car running, key and Iphone on the driver door, my son went inside to get his iPad and when he stepped out, touched the door handle, door locked with key and phone inside. Had to call BMW assist to unlock my car.

As I read above, i think the phone signal messes up the signal from my key and the car thinks the key is outsdie the car. Happened a lot of times where I cant start the car as it cant detect the key on my pocket (with my iPhone on the same pocket).

Closed hatch, came back an hour later and no door would open.

I didn't think hatch was supposed to close with key in storage area.

iPhone app worked to unlock, but seems like a design shortcoming to me...
Similar thing happened to me...we were about to take a road trip to DC and having been driving the M3 lately (with no comfort access), I was used to the car being totally locked or unlocked to access any doors/trunk. I walked up to the X5 with the key fob in the backpack. Opened the trunk (walked up, pushed trunk button; doors still remain locked and trunk relocks after being closed) and put the backpack in. Walked to the drivers side door, forgot key was not in my pocket and realized I locked the key inside the truck.

Luckily I paid BMW Assist, as I almost canceled it due to non-use, and they remotely unlocked it.

Bad design in my opinion. People lock their kids in their car accidentally. You shouldn't be allowed to lock the car from the outside while the car is running with key inside - simple as that.

I've done that before with the key in the backpack placed in the trunk (we were at the beach)... when it comes down it's supposed to pop back open immediately. I was wondering why it didn't close all the way till I realized.

Anyway, seems like CA is inconsistent or there's interference.
