2 rear face car seats side by side (pictures)

hi all, we are expecting twins and i'd love to stick the chicco keyfit 30 rear facing infant car seats side by side (one in the middle and one behind passenger seat). i'm a tall guy so its very uncomfortable if one of the seats were behind the driver. 2012 X5 35d.

see attached picture of the mock-up. i am securing the outboard seat with latch and the middle seat is secured with the middle seat belt. i cant use both latch because i would have to share one of the latch anchor points in the X5, doesnt seem safe that way?

the seats are touching each other side by side, as you can see in the photo. other than that, it seems to "work" and everything seems fine. but my main concern is safety, is this safe/approved method?

i couldnt find any info in the manuals or from searching online... hopefully one of you have experienced this. thanks!!

First of all, congrats for those two upcoming little angels! As seen on your pics this setup looks pretty safe, but first of all never forget to drive carefully and enjoy those great years to come.

Call Chico. They will tell you if the anchors can be used that way. I called about out GMC envoy and they couldn't be used with a seat in the middle I have looked in the manual of the X5 and it doesn't specify which I was surprised by because I was wondering if I could just put a car seat in the middle.

First, congrats!

Can't tell from the pics, because they look fine, yet couple things to note (btw I have 3 young ones).

1). Latch meant for 1 attachment and meant for two side seats
2). When using the middle seatbelt to secure, make sure you pull it all the way out before you tighten. This will lock the seatbelt in place
3). When installing the bases, put all your weight on the base as you tighten the "latch" or seatbelt. This will ensure it's tight (there should be little to no lateral movement in the seats, if so, it's too loose). Hope it NEVER happens, but in the event of an accident, the seats would be jarred loose from the impact. Quite amazing how much the seats would move during impact, so as tight as possible (same for when you use the five point harness on the babies, tighter the better, don't worry about their "comfort", worry more about their safety. Tightness won't hurt them, movement will especially with their undeveloped neck muscles.
4). Is there an indicator on the base to show the level of the seat? We used the peg perego, and there's a level that indicates how the seat should be positioned (the slant).
5). Even once installed properly, after you snap the seats onto the bases numerous times, you should recheck the tightness of the bases
6). Where I live, we can bring out car seats in to the local fire hall to have them check on whether or not they've been installed properly. Check where you can have this service done (should be free)
7). Holy crap, twins!!

thanks for the advice all! i guess my main concern was the 2 car seats "touching" each other side by side as shown in the pictures. seems like maybe i shouldnt be too concerned about it.

one thing that bothers me about this config is when i snap the child seats in to the base, one of the seats needs to "move" a bit laterally to make space since they are so close together. so sometimes you get one seat a bit tweaked just barely to allow enough space for the other seat to snap in.

yes, thats my E36 M3 track car in the garage, a blast on the track. i actually use the x5 to tow the car on my trailer, along with all my track crap. x5 is a fantastic vehicle for towing, daily driving, track support for the M3
