I just used the heated wheel in my 2012 35d for the first time this past week. Mine gets very warm, very quickly, all around the circumference (ironically a little less warm / little more slowly at 3 and 9). I have sport activity package with larger rimmed steering wheel, although not sure that matters.

In use, I turn on when I start the car to "take the edge off" the cold leather, then switch it off - so no idea how it behaves if I were to leave it on...

That's the way it's supposed to work - it's just like your heated seats. If you leave it on continuously, it will just stay nice and warm.

The steering wheels in my '10 and '12 X5 35d's warms up differently. The 2010 warms up just right, but mainly only at 10 and 2 o'clock positions. In contrast, the 2012 warms up so hot, that I typically just shut if off after a while. The steering wheel is also warm throughout the circumference, not just at 10 and 2 o'clock. I was thinking talking to the dealer about this next time I take either of them in.

I'm having the same issue where it is mildly warm at best in the position of 10 & 2 o'clock. For some reason I thought it was much warmer in previous years. I have a new Jeep Overland and that thing heats up so fast and extremely hot that I have to turn it off. Not sure if I'm noticing the difference because of the Jeep or maybe the wheel is getting old and losing it's strength. I wonder what would happen if I replaced the wheel if that would make a difference? My X5 is an 07 and only driven from September to May. I did replace a battery a year or so ago.

My 2007 4.8i gets heated up quickly and I frequently have to turn it off after 5-10 minutes because my palms start getting moist.

That's what I remembered. So I guess the wheel is getting old or it has something to do with that new battery. I'll have to ask BMW.

lmao. I had to turn off the wheel on the Jeep because I thought I was going to have 3rd degree burns. I guess my wife won't be too happy this morning. I'll buy her some gloves for her X5.
