Son of a bitch. I just measured the rotors and the new rotors are 13 and 3/4 inches and the old ones are 14 and 3/8 inches. So not only won't the pads work but the rotors won't work either.

Yeah ... you have a bit of a hybrid system and it all started by whomever changed the original single piston calipers to double piston calipers ... Can you get a hold of the previous owner and ask what happened to the OE calipers?

If you can get the OE calipers (and brackets and make sure they come from a 4.8i!!) you can use the rotors and pads I have (cheap!).

I'd go back to the OE setup if I were you ... keep it simple.

No I got the car off a dealer lot so no access to the previous owner.

I'd rather not go back to stock if I don't have to. Seems a little silly to downgrade from a big brake to a little brake. It's an option if I can't source the correct parts but no doubt the last option I would take.

Dave Z also has a phone. A back and forth conversation with a phone in one hand and a tape measure in the other while standing AT the wheel might be a much more effective way to get to a conclusion....

ive worked with Dave for years.... fantastic resource.

I think the X5 M50D had dual piston brakes, you may want to check if thats what you have retrofitted to your 4.8i

Ok I'll give him a call but I think I found out what they are. It seems someone has put UK OEM brakes on this e70 X5. The calipers have a casting of 904 and 42/36/365. The rotors are a 365mm rotor and when I look up UK rotors for the 4.8i they are a 365mm X 36mm rotor. Now all I need it to find a location in the USA to order new rotors and pads.

Part Number TCA4232 Type Vented
Description Brake Caliper OE System ATE
Piston Qty x Dia 2 x 42mm Caliper Type Trailing
Disc Size 36mm x 365mm Dia Comments Cast Code 904 or 42/36/365
Sizes Disc Size (mm):365 x 36 Engine Code N62B48B
BHP 355

Excellent .. so you are half way to resolving the dilemma you're in.

However, here's my opinion: if you are an average driver, you will never appreciate the subtle benefit, if any, of going from the OE single piston caliper to a dual piston caliper (a four piston, no floating caliper is a different story). The 4.8i has MASSIVE OE front brakes to start with and tend to be very effective.

The other thing: if you bought this car with a CPO, you will never be able to make any claims with respect to the front brake system, because they're not OE.

Let us know how you make out ... I'm very curious what the rotors, pads an sensor will cost.

So after some research on my own and a few phone calls to professionals it seems the brakes on my car are from a 2008 BMW X6 xdrive50i. The company R1Concepts - OEM, Drilled & Slotted Brake Rotors - Brake Pads - Brake Calipers that I purchased the rotors from help me figure it out. They also took the rotors I have back and are sending me the correct ones and pads. Total for the rotors and pads was just under $400.00 shipped and they are paying to ship the old ones back. Now that is costumer service. Considering they didn't make a mistake and spend 30 minutes on the phone figuring out what brakes I had I would have thought I would either eat the cost or the rotors or at least pay to ship them back. I would no doubt purchase from this company again. It's been a while since I had dealings with a company like this.

In case anyone is wondering, it seems 2008 BMW X6 xdrive50i has dual piston calipers and they will work on the 2008 BMW X5 4.8is (most likely all e70's but I know they work on mine).

Not sure. I'll have to take a look and let you know. I'm not even sure if the rears were changed or if they are stock yet.
