I'm glad the USB works w/flash drives/ext HD's b/c my Ipod hasn't been updated for about 5 yrs and I don't feel like using iTunes anymore...way easier to just throw some music on USB! Hell, I'm still buying CD's once n while n rotating them in my changer... Quote:

Hey all,
Glad I found this old thread. My 10 y.o. 30gb iPod is dying a slow death. It has been relegated to my center console under armrest for a couple years since it doesn't have enough battery to go mobile, so I leave it in the X5 plugged in and it powers it and plays music fine via iDrive. On VERY cold mornings it takes a while for it to power up enough to show in the iDrive menu... My plan is to replace it with a USB flash drive. However I am seeing conflicting info on here as to drive size limit. Someone posted that nothing over 32gb worked, but someone else has a 1tb HDD hooked up... Would the limits be different based on the storage being HDD vs USB flash drive? The guy how saw a 32gb limit seemed to have an older X5 but not sure what model year the other guy with the HDD has... I just ordered a 128gb USB stick. If no answer is posted I will try it when it arrives and post back here.

Looking at the post, it looked more like the issue was how it was formatted. Needs to be FAT32. Which coincidently Windows limits to being formatted at 32 gigs or below. There's ways around it though.

From what I see, FAT32 is the standard on most flashdrives, even larger than 32gb.
Well I'll know if it works in a few days!

I have read so much information regarding this topic on various sites....... but I am still no wiser.
My, recently new to me, e70 2007 X5 3.0D doesn't have a USB socket, but there is an AUX socket under the split armrest. I have an iPod Classic 160Gb with stacks/lots of music on it...... would a 3.5mm jack to jack lead, connected from the AUX to the iPod head phone socket, plus the original lead connected from the iPod to a USB type charging plug do the job, or will the quality be absolute shite ???? (For those from across the pond, I am English, so I apologise for using our correct terminology ![]() ) Oh, and I do enjoy banter, I have many friends and a few relatives on the other side of the pond

Not sure what the answer was. Did you play music files burned in DVD-RW in 6 DVD changer in your globe box or not?

I do not use aux from armrest...that sound is not so good! I use aux from rear module...but it is for my Android when I am watching music from youtube!

MINESAPASTY - I think the setup you described would work fine, that is how my wife's 328 is set up. Have to turn the volume up on the iPod itself or it will be a low signal coming into the AUX feed to the head unit. This makes it sound better too, the signal overcomes any inherent noise more so.
BTW What's a PASTY??

Can't post a picture as photobucket has changed...... but a traditional Cornish pasty is diced steak, potato, onion, swede plus salt and pepper in a pastry and cooked...... lovely :-)
Anyway, back on topic..... I will have to get a lead, and give my iPod a try. So far, I have been happily listening to the radio or a few choice CDs, but our pending trip across Europe will require a lot more music than the 6 CDs that can fit into the CD changer, my iPod is a 160Gb classic and has loads of tunes on it. |
